Publisher's summary
New York Times best-selling author Firoozeh Dumas is used to making people laugh, but in 2022, she found herself drowning in tears of sadness. After her 2022 Los Angeles Times article "What I needed was a rest break on the Island of Grieving and Useless Folks" went viral, she was inspired to write Sob, a one-hour audio story about grief, healing, and miracles that will leave you spellbound.
In this unflinching story, Firoozeh Dumas, author of the international best seller Funny in Farsi, takes you into the worst year of her life, which she describes as “a bouillon cube of grief”. After the unexpected break up of her longtime marriage in 2022, Firoozeh finds herself in completely new territory, untethered from the only life she knew as an adult. Using her signature wit, she recounts her highly personal journey through this uncharted and unplanned chapter in her life. Hers is a journey she would have never chosen, but one that ultimately leads her to a deeper truth about herself, to a better place where hope and grace are a daily part of life and where serendipity is always around the corner. Firoozeh’s story will leave you crying, laughing, and pondering some of life’s big questions.
Honest and touching, heartbreaking and inspiring, Firoozeh’s story will resonate with anyone who has found themselves in the dark night of the soul and wondered if there is a way out. You will immediately want to discuss Sob with your friends. It is an experience meant to be shared.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side? In Going Infinite Lewis sets out to answer this question, taking listeners into the mind of Bankman-Fried.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Story
Kathleen Hanna’s band Bikini Kill embodied the punk scene of the 90s, and today her personal yet feminist lyrics on anthems like “Rebel Girl” and “Double Dare Ya” are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from? In Rebel Girl, Hanna’s raw and insightful new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood to her formative college years and her first shows. As Hanna makes clear, being in a punk “girl band” in those years was not a simple or safe prospect.

For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. Story
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

What grief gives us
I laid down for a nap today and instead listened to this wonderful, short book. It was just what I needed as I’m going through a difficult time and Firoozeh reminded me that the path, while rocky sometimes, is guided by the unseen.

Profound, funny & touching
Sob is a must listen. Not sure how Firoozeh Dumas managed to squeeze so much heartbreak and joy into a 49 minute audiobook, but I guess that’s her brilliance as a writer. She truly got to me on every level. It just came out today and I’m already listening to it for a second time.

A Tour de Force
Firoozeh writes masterfully about her grief and coming to a better understanding and final acceptance of it. The writing is only enhanced by her reading which is more of a performance.

Captivating storytelling about a universal human experience
This is a touching and timeless short story embodying the intertwined experiences of love and grief. So very relatable. In parts, I have laughed and I have cried. And the authors voice has soothed me on long, healing walks as I reflect on my own past experiences. Why do I listen to it again and again? Because it provides comfort and hope. If you’ve ever wondered about the power of divine intervention, you must give this audiobook a listen. Simply a masterpiece.
