Story
At Mt. Douglas (a.k.a. Mt. Drug) High, all the girls have feathered hair, and the sweet scent of Love's Baby Soft can't hide the musk of raw teenage anger, apathy, and desire. Sara Shaw is a girl full of fever and longing, a girl looking for something risky, something real. Her only possible salvation comes in the willowy form of the mysterious Justine, the outlaw girl in the torn skirt. The search for Justine will lead Sara on a daring odyssey into an underworld of hookers and johns, junkies and thieves, runaway girls and skater boys, and, ultimately, into a violent tragedy.

Story
In September of 1990, in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, sixteen-year-old Lisa Pruett was on her way to a midnight tryst with her boyfriend when she was viciously stabbed to death only thirty feet from the boy's home. The murder cast a palpable gloom over the upscale community and sparked accusations, theories, and rumors among Lisa's friends and peers. With a fresh perspective and painstaking research, James Renner reconstructs the events leading up to and following that heartbreaking night. What emerges is a portrait of a community seething with dark undercurrents.

Story
On May 31, 2014, in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls attempted to stab their classmate to death. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier’s violence was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they committed their crime under the influence of a figure born by the internet: the so-called “Slenderman”. Yet the even more urgent aspect of the story, that the children involved suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses, often went overlooked in coverage of the case.

When Max Marshall arrived on the campus of the College of Charleston in 2018, he hoped to investigate a small-time fraternity Xanax trafficking ring. Instead, he found a homicide, several student deaths, and millions of dollars circulating around the Deep South. He also opened up an elite world hidden to outsiders. Behind the pop culture cliches of “Greek life” lies one of the major breeding grounds of American power: 80 percent of Fortune 500 executives, 85 percent of Supreme Court justices, and all but four presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members.

Publisher's summary
Now a Hulu limited series starring Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone.
“A swift, harrowing classic perfect for these unnerving times.” (Jenny Offill, author of Dept. of Speculation)
One moonlit night, 14-year-old Reena Virk went to join friends at a party and never returned home. In this “tour de force of crime reportage” (Kirkus Reviews), acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey takes us into the hidden world of the seven teenage girls - and boy - accused of a savage murder. As she follows the investigation and trials, Godfrey reveals the startling truth about the unlikely killers. Laced with lyricism and insight, Under the Bridge is an unforgettable look at a haunting modern tragedy.
Critic reviews
"With a gripping journalistic style, novelist Godfrey (The Torn Skirt) recounts the story behind a horrific murder in a small British Columbia town. One November night in 1997, 14-year-old Reena Virk was savagely beaten and drowned under a waterway bridge. From a small East Indian community, Reena was alienated from her family and spent her time desperately trying to find a place with a tough crowd of teenagers, several of whom had been in trouble with the law. But one of the girls held a grudge against her, and Reena apparently was lured to her violent end by a promise of friendship. Seven girls and one boy initially were charged with assault. Two were convicted of murder: Warren Glowatski, now serving a life sentence, and Kelly Ellard, who was found guilty in 2005 after three trials. Godfrey is careful not to make judgments, but her informed writing reveals a remorseful Warren, an unrepentant Kelly (who denies her guilt) and other psychologically damaged members of the group, sharply etched, whose casual brutality, enabled by drug use, led to a brutal and senseless death. Godfrey's account contains some recreated dialogue but overall is meticulously researched and harrowing to read." -- Publishers' Weekly
"Godfrey approaches a brutal crime in an unlikely spot the way a novelist would, by tracing, first of all, how the victim and persecutors came to be in that place, through all the tangled byroads of families seeking a better life. In November 1997, the body of a 14-year-old girl, whose family had emigrated from India, was found in the waters off Victoria Island in British Columbia. The victim, Reena Virk, had been beaten to death. Seven girls and one boy, all high-schoolers, were charged with the crime. Godfrey follows the case from discovery through verdict at trial, seeking to answer the one question the trial testimony could not: Why did a gang of mostly well-off teens commit casual murder? Her interviews with all the principals, ranging from the police scuba team that found the body through prosecution and defense attorneys, suburban families, teachers, and the accused themselves, bring this case disturbingly alive." -- Connie Fletcher, Booklist

Story
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

After his first grisly crime, Harvey Louis Carignan beat a death sentence and continued to manipulate, rape, and bludgeon women to death - using want ads to lure his young female victims. And time after time, justice was thwarted by a killer whose twisted legal genius was matched only by his sick savagery. Here, complete with the testimony of women who suffered his unspeakable sexual abuses and barely escaped with their lives and of the police who at last put him behind bars, is one of the most shattering and thought-provoking true-crime stories of our time.

It was a bleak November in 2012 when Cari Lea Farver vanished from Omaha, Nebraska. Cari, 37, was a devoted mother, reliable employee, and loyal friend - not the type to shirk responsibilities, abandon her son, and run off on an adventure while her dying father took his last breaths. Yet, the many texts from her phone indicated she had done just that. While Cari's boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, and her supervisor were bewildered by her abrupt disappearance, they accepted the texts at face value. Her mother, Nancy Raney, however, was alarmed and reported Cari missing.

She’s in a reflective mood, thinking back on her thrilling, tragic, nearly impossible journey from her sheltered, old-fashioned family in New York to here: iconoclast and independent woman. The accents are not needed
I want to really like the book. The story itself is inviting. The narrative is terrible. The bad valley-girl accents to the terrible Indian accents take away from the story. It seems as though an 8th grade girl is reading.

Largely gripping story of teenage brutality
The book explores a brutal crime--only partially premeditated--perpetrated by a group of young teens on another and follows the ramifications of that crime in their lives and their community. It's mostly very good. The author's perspective is not one of a crime writer, but a fiction writer, and so the narrative is sometimes a bit more artful and empathetic than I was expecting.
It does begin to drag a bit towards the end, as we go through several trials and hear dozens of versions of the story from the teens involved, but I almost didn't mind, because it mirrors what must have felt like an unending saga for the community and the participants.
The narrator reads well and with feeling, but sometimes makes questionable choices--maybe don't do the Punjabi accents of these real people, and please never try a blaccent again. But on the whole I found her very good.

Power and deep reflection
I loved the way the author embodied this story of tragedy, teen life and life long consequences for this group of people. She gives a raw and unflinching view of each character and scene, but does it with such care. I think that while these events really happened in a very specific time and place, the way she gets down the humanity (or lack there of) in each person and breaks down each incident to its fundamental machinations creates a sense of timelessness that has lessons a reader from any walk of life and any time can relate to and learn from.

Fantastic
A flawless account of a devastating story. And the courtroom scene during the second trial is everything I’ve ever wanted in entertainment. Love this book, love the author, loved her as narrator. I also feel like I know Reena now. She’s a fully dimensional and nuanced person, not just your typical “girl-next-door-everyone-loved-her-smile” type of “Aw shucks”-ness I normally equate with innocent victims in true crime stories such as these. I feel like Reena’s family are the true heroes of this tale. Can’t wait for more Godfrey. Brava friend. (She’s not my friend I just thought that sounded cool).

Observations on Humanity
The human, good, bad and confused. The naïveté and lack of self knowledge, evident in the early teen years, are all keenly observed, and communicated by this skilled and gentle writer.
I became aware of this writer by reading her obituary at the age of 54, in The NY Times. There was something about her gamine looks coupled with her list of accomplishments that drew me in and sent me in search of her books. Thankfully, as the message of mental health care, anger management and a place to grow and develop for every young personality was communicated in an intriguing way.
Everyone will enjoy this book.

Under the Bridge
It was very slow. It read like a police report. Interesting story, but wanted to know more about the people.

True story
Sad but Compelling story. Fascinating to see young children navigate and process a horrific event that was so easily avoidable. Kelly is evil incarnate.
