Publisher's summary

A stifling heat wave rolls into New York City, amplifying the already critical level of tension in the fragile concrete ecosystem. The air tastes of electricity - the negative charge of bad things to come - but everyone hopes it’s just the temperature. Then, on the morning homicide detective Alexandra “Hemi” Hemingway finds out she is pregnant, a twisted serial killer makes his debut. And the heat goes up.

Not for the faint of heart - American Woman is a relentless ride that takes you through the fractured world of a nascent killer. And you will never feel safe again.

I'm Not Sure

Okay; this is a hard one to call. It is certainly a series that shows promise; Allie Hemingway is a formidable, if not exactly a really likable protagonist. There is a lot of action and Hemi's partner Phelps is a strong supporting player.
On the other hand. Hemingway's boyfriend Daniel is an undeveloped character, Allie's family are shadows and the motivations that drive Hemingway aren't clear.
The two principal reservations I have with this book is that I found the villain too brilliant to be believable. The second one is that I found too much of the violence in this book to be more gratuitous than was necessary for a book. It actually reminded me more a movie plot; say something in the lines of something in the Hannibal Lecter series. I can't recommend this particular selection but I will keep an eye on future works with this character or by this writer.

So-so story after the amazing Bloodman

Would you try another book from Robert Pobi and/or Christina Traister?

Not impressed with Christina Traister's narration. Her attempt at a male voice equaled a monotone lower pitch that was difficult to endure. I think she got better as the book moved along, but it was very difficult to listen to at the start

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I ended up reading the first 15 or 20 chapters because I couldn't handle the narration.

Do you think American Woman needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not really - although I think I read it is one of a series. The characters weren't that compelling.

Any additional comments?

Skip this one and read/listen to Bloodman. Fabulous book.
