  • Resumen

  • I feel a bit silly about how long it to took me to work out I was gay - like that should be an easy thing to know about yourself? Shouldn’t it? In this episode, I exchange notes with Cole Escola, Tony Kushner, Dan Savage, David Sedaris, Joel Kim Booster, Katja Blichfeld, Tig Notaro and my best friend, Tom Ward.

Josh Thomas is my dream friend

One of my best friends is very much like the legendary Josh Thomas. His directness that he uses to endear himself to others is incredibly rare. He has a rare vibe. I’ve only seen his kind of vibe and humor in my best friend. So listening to Josh is like reconnecting from my dear best friend. I truly enjoy every minute of it.

If you find him at all intriguing from this, you will LOVE his brilliant tv shows (airing now on Hulu!) “Please Like Me” and “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay”. If you get it, you get it. If you don’t, I feel truly sorry for you.

No Wonder it's Free

This was not interesting in the least for Kinsey 1 thru 6. The narrator is annoying and speaks of very silly topics. The only person IMO that this book might help is parents of LGBTQ children. Just remember: free is free for a reason. 🏳️‍🌈

Flawed but Valuable

Josh Thomas is new to me, and I found this podcast really interesting. The fact that it includes interviews with my heroes Sedaris and Savage very much helps. Thomas sounds as if he's been on quite a journey - I don't know that I'd have liked the younger version, but I do like the adult Thomas. I also appreciate that he's trying to do something useful and helpful here. As I said in the title, it's flawed, but I found it to be a thoughtful and honest effort. The story of Angel Joy, who grew up gay in Chechnya, was harrowing to hear. It's appalling that anyone is still treated this way in this day, particularly for experiencing love in a non-heteronormative way. I'd say it doesn't make me hopeful for humans as a species, but Angel's survival, escape, and his personal victory over this experience kind of does. He's amazing. I strongly encourage donations to Rainbow Railroad in support of people like Angel who are trying to get free of dangerous, often deadly situations.

This podcast is, I think, well worth listening to. I think that Thomas is exploring some quite basic issues and aspects of being gay, but he does it in a pretty open-minded and nonjudgemental way. (It's interesting that there's an assumption that somehow the non-het world IS less judgemental, because there can be as much judging there as anywhere - it's just over different things.) I think Thomas is both pretty open about his own biases and makes an effort, here, to challenge them, or at least consider them. And Savage is really brilliant about love and sex, which helps this podcast a great deal.
