Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.
They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.
Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.
But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way - even if it kills her.
Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

Couldn’t Put It Down!!! So Good!!
NO SPOILERS! I love John Marrs books and they keep getting better. This book was very different and a true psychological thriller. The narration was phenomenal. The villains voice made me want to punch her in the face.. it’s that annoying.
This book had me engrossed and in the end left me completely satisfied. I highly recommend to anyone who likes domestic thrillers or psychological thrillers.

Typical Marr's story, ends on a horrific downer
In spite of numerous opportunities for the story to take a positive turns, you can always count on Marr's to make sure it never goes there. 100% of his story follow the most negative storyline possible (you can take it, as does Marr's, to the bank); if that is what you enjoy, then this nightmare just might be your cuppa...

Very cleverly written, excellent narration
I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The characters, in all their flaws, weaknesses and very human foibles, were as real and vivid as if they had just stepped off the pages into reality. This is an excellent example of what a psychological thriller should be, thanks to the clever writing which takes readers down paths that are seemingly simple and uncomplicated at first but gradually, ever so gradually, give away their secrets as Maggie and Nina's stories continue to unfold.
The narration was excellent, with the narrator capturing two distinct main characters of varying ages - as well as the secondary characters - with consistent attention to detail so that there was never any cause for confusion as to who was speaking - in case the named chapters weren't sufficient as clues.
Taken altogether, this is an excellent story and a worthy audiobook. I look forward to listening to more books by this author.

Good Story.
This was a pretty good book. I did not see the ending coming so that was rather a surprise. The reader did a good job with her characterization and I enjoyed the book.

Excellent! Full of surprises!
The only person I felt sorry for shows up almost towards the end of the story - I don't want to give anything away. The mother in trying to do the right thing still brings no sympathy. The daughter brings nothing but disdain. But those feelings brought out in the reader are what a good author does - makes you feel SOMETHING. The narrator did a good job. Sometimes the low whispers made the story flat. And getting softer and more muted since just in their heads most of the time built full at times.
But overall it's worth it.
