Publisher's summary
If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again—by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide—and when to shoot.
But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet are such a place—a place where violence is the only way to survive.
Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West—but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

Story
It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

The nonstop action
I loved this book even though I was reluctant to start it due to its length. I didn’t think anything in the genre that was so long could ever sustain a pace to make it worthwhile, but because I loved his first book, “I am Pilgrim,” I bought it and listened to it. I was wrong. Even at more than 20 hours listening time, this book is filled with action and suspense from beginning to end and the story flies by. This book has wonderful writing, with an outstanding story with twists and turns, and a completely surprise twist about 3/4 of the way through the book; and an explosive ending. In addition, the narrator hits all the right notes. I can’t recommend this audio version of the book more highly. If you love thrillers, buy this book.

Crazy story that Christopher Nolan should adapt
Started out as a good spy thriller and around part 3, a WTF moment happens that literally had me stopping what I was doing and hear it again. It’s been awhile that a book does that too me. Overall cool story, thrilling read, and great narrator.

Weird
I read the first book in the series and thought it was great. I am confused how this is the next book in the series. It has nothing in common with the first other than starting out as a spy thriller. However the book turns sci-fi 3/4 of the way in. Not what I expected.

What an incredible ride!
Terry Hayes took his time to bang out this classic but it was worth the wait.
The one thing I appreciate about this story and the author was his ability to explain every single detail he gave us and how it all contributed to the story.....and what a story it turned out to be!!
I won't go into details because it will do a disservice to anyone picking up the book.
Jeff Harding and his narraration, simply amazing!
I know it will be a long time before his next book but I already look forward to reading this book again.

WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?
I did not sync with the book in the beginning probably because I was looking to connect the first book to this one, but this is an entirely a new book with new characters. So, technically, it is not a sequel to the Pilgrim but perhaps more aptly, the second installment of a series of many more to come.
The other surprise, the book is a thriller and sci-fi rolled into one. I did not expect this either but overall, the story is well thought out, creative, detailed and tight. To me, his writing style has poetic quality. The book has both form and substance and I appreciate how the words are crafted all the while maintaining the flow of the story so succinctly; a hard task made to look easy.
In my humble opinion as a reader, it would be better to choose one genre, either thriller or sci-fi and keep the series going.
As far as I am concerned, he is one of the most talented authors in my book.
I am blown away by the sheer length of 29 hours and if it means that I have to wait another 10 years for the next book of epic proportion, I am happy to settle for a shorter book next year!

Two things
In this story the author follows the life and times of the hero instead of the villain. The author has reach for more than one genre, and in my opinion he has brought them in. The Year of the Locust was an engaging and entertaining experience. Thank you for this offering Mr. Hayes.
