Publisher's summary

Cameron Winter was born with a "strange habit of mind"—the ability to recreate detailed crime scenes in his imagination and dissect the motives and encounters that produced them. And after reading a puzzling news story about a wealthy family killed in a small town in the Chicago suburbs, he can't resist the chance to apply this deductive power in the pursuit of justice for the victims.

Three members of the family, along with their live-in nanny, were pulled from their burning mansion, already dead from gunshot wounds. The only survivor is a young boy whose memory of the event raises more questions than answers. The police seem happy to settle on a simple explanation and arrest the most obvious suspect—but Winter knows that obvious solutions are seldom the correct ones.

While Winter's investigation is welcomed by many, the lead detective makes it clear he not only wants Winters to stop looking for answers, but to stay out of his town altogether. Winter begins to understand why as he slowly uncovers crimes and unsavory behavior that had been ignored long before the killings, and in the process grows increasingly determined to find the real killer and expose the rot beneath the town's sanitized façade. And as the inquiry brings all-too-familiar sins to the surface, he'll have to confront his own inner demons once and for all.

Consumed while cleaning

I couldn’t stop listening to this book! I cleaned all day just to try and finish it. The story had depth and a plot. I get so sick of books that are baseless. The ones where you push through to see if it gets better, but it never does. This one is not that! From the very beginning it has a point and you want to finish to know how things end. Now I need book #4. I need to know more about Winter’s future.

Worth the wait

I loved it. My only complaint is I binge listened and now I’m finished. I will read it again. Thank you, Mr. Klavan. When is #4 coming out? 😁

Excellent, Interesting, Inspiring

Thanks Drew, for giving us a who-done-it that makes a compelling story, with spot on observations about how our cultural rot is impacting the lives of people and society. There is nobility, integrity, courage, sacrifice and forgiveness in us. It’s a sad story, but not a story lacking hope. Narrator did an exceptional job.

Best One Yet

Much more development of the main character in this third book. The review of his assassin/spy days, along with the solving of a murder intertwined with corrupt police and drug cartels kept the pace going with multiple dramas. The various convoluted romantic situations among various characters ranged from tawdry to desperate to tragic and hopeful. Klavan did a good job creating a series of disparate events and interesting characters, all the while making them integrate seamlessly. Even the flashbacks are relevant to the overall story. By putting the flashbacks in the context of Cam’s therapy sessions it makes the past story flow into the therapeutic dialogue and how it affects that relationship, then that therapy serves as a link to what’s happening with the present investigations. So many sub-stories among the characters, but the author made them all relate to the overall plot.

While reading the first two books might be helpful in relation to some references in this book, this is a good standalone story which would be coherent to anyone starting with this book. I enjoyed it very much.

Excellent writing

Highly recommend this book for anyone who loves character driven mysteries. It should be a New York Times bestseller, but the author doesn't cave to woke propaganda.
