A groundbreaking guide to the surprising source of good health. Genetics and lifestyle are thought to be the two most important determinants of good health. But that is not the whole story. We have a second genome, our gut bacteria, that sets the dial on our bodies. Unlike our DNA, we can influence the gut bacteria, or microbiota, to optimize all aspects of our health. In The Good Gut, noted Stanford researchers Justin and Erica Sonnenburg investigate how the trillions of microbes that reside in our gastrointestinal tract help define us.

In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy.

All can be stoked by high uric acid levels. Our most respected scientific literature is bursting with evidence that elevated uric acid levels lie at the root of many pervasive health conditions, but mainstream medicine for the most part remains unaware of this connection.

Resumen del Editor
From one of today’s leading experts on the emerging science of the microbiome-brain communication, comes a groundbreaking book that offersevidence that diet- and lifestyle-induced changes in the gut-microbiome play a pivotal role in the health crises of the 21st century.
In his acclaimed book, The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, offered groundbreaking evidence of the critical role of the microbiome in neurological, emotional and cognitive health, proving once and for all the power and legitimacy of the close interactions of the gut microbiome and the brain. Now, in The Gut-Immune Connection, Dr. Mayer expands on this topic and proposes an even more radical paradigm shift: the gut microbiome is at the center of virtually every major disease that defines our 21st-century public health crisis.
Our understanding of the function and impact of the trillions of microorganisms that live in the GI tract continues to advance, and in Dr. Mayer’s own research, he has amassed evidence that the “conversation” that takes place between these microbes and our various organs and bodily systems, is critical to human health.
The Gut-Immune Connection offers a comprehensive look at the link between alterations to the gut microbiome and the development of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, brain disorders and cancer, as well as susceptibility to infectious diseases like COVID-19. He reveals the links between the health of the gut microbiome, with the way our food is grown, and ultimately the health of the planet. Dr. Mayer argues that it’s essential we understand the profound effects of gut health on our body and offers strategies to reverse the steady upward rise of these illnesses, including a model for nutrition that puts the health of the microbiome center stage.
But time is running out: an irreversible decline of gut microbial diversity and its catastrophic effects on our health is only a few decades away if we don’t make critical changes to both our diet and food supply. To turn the tide, we must radically shift the way we live today.

Historia
The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, according to an Institute of Medicine report released in 2011. For many, chronic pain is part of an autoimmune disease, but all too often doctors turn to the same solution: painkilling drugs. But all of this medication simply isn't helping. As Dr. Peter Osborne, the leading authority on gluten sensitivity and food allergies, has found, the real solution often lies in what you eat.

In looking to the recipes and foods of the past, Fallon Morell points listeners to what they should actually be eating - the key principles of traditional diets from across cultures - and offers recipes to help translate these ideas to the modern home cook.

Automaton voice; content not so digestible
I was somewhat hesitant to review this book because it's difficult to evaluate the content given the dreadful delivery. I've tried to listen to it twice, and had to push myself to keep going both times. The narrator sounds like a computer. Yes, Charles Constant has a nice voice, but he very rarely varies his inflection or pace. With regard to the content, I had hoped to build on the information I had earlier acquired from 10% Human, my introduction to the microbiome, and a book I can highly recommend. The author of 10% Human, Alanna Collen, an evolutionary biologist, conveys an excitement about the growing body of knowledge concerning the microbiome, as does the narrator. By contrast, I experienced Dr. Emeran Mayer's book as turgid. On the macro level, his emphasis on the interconnectedness of gut, microbiome, brain, emotions, chronic illness, soil quality, plants and the environment had a neat logic, but was not revelatory. On the micro level, his advice on diet (as well as the rather basic accompanying recipes), is well-worn if one has had any exposure to other sources of information about plant-based diets.
