Interesting facts, great advice

As a white, cis, heterosexual, middle aged female, I really struggle to know what level off privilege I'm exhibiting both in the very act of listening to this book and in "judging" the content in writing a review, so I implore you to take this review with the kind-hearted, thoughtfulness as it is intended.

I personally have learned and studied many ways to improve mental health, including psycho therapy, yoga, space clearing, tidying up, earthing, essential oils, meditation and more. What I appreciate about this book is the listing out and breaking down the many ways to self care. As a student of self care, I found the author is spot on and I picked up a couple new topics along the way.

I also appreciate the author's illuminating facts & statistics about the African-American experience - I was truly educated in this regard! For example, the percent of black people living outside of easy access, safe to nature & natural settings was astonishing. Also the historical law that forced black women to work outside the home - my mind was absolutely blown! Btw, I find such a thing deeply distributing & outright disgusting!

Additionally, I appreciate the author calling b.s. on Grind Culture - in my own journey through life and career I have most certainly experienced this in spades. Including negative reinforcement for self caring activities, objectification and ridicule for working smarter.

Where I struggle with this book is that it seems to be targeted to African-Americans but the advice is absolutely applicable to a person of any race, culture and color. Guilt was the dominant feeling when listening to this book as it felt like I was eavesdropping on a private conversation. I gave the book only 4 stars for this reason.

But overall I found this book an inspiring reminder that I'm important whether I'm in the act of producing or in the act of taking care of my needs. And that self care is what allows an individual to thrive and be a joyful producer. This is truly what will make society at large a more peaceful, supportive place!!
