Thirty-two-year-old Jess Abbot has lost everything: her job, her apartment, and - most heart-wrenching - her eight-year-old son, Chance, to a tragic accident. Haunted by memories and grief, Jess packs what’s left and heads for the small mountain town of Pine Lake, where she takes a position as caregiver to an eccentric old woman. Posy Fairweather is over the moon when her boyfriend Matt proposes in what is probably the most romantic way possible—on top of a mountain, in a thunderstorm, like something from a Nicholas Sparks novel. But a few days later he dumps her. Crushed and humiliated, Posy wonders why all her romances have always been such train wrecks. Determined to gain some insight, Posy resolves to get online, track down her exes, and ask them. Which doors from Posy’s past should stay closed? Which might open? Can she learn from past mistakes?

Margo Everson sees the call out for the cookbook club and knows she’s found her people. Recently dumped by her self-absorbed husband, who frankly isn’t much of a loss, she has little to show for her marriage but his "parting gift"—a dilapidated old farm house—and a collection of well-loved cookbooks. Aja Alexander just hopes her newfound friends won’t notice that that every time she looks at food, she gets queasy. It’s hard hiding a pregnancy, especially one she can’t bring herself to share with her wealthy boyfriend and his snooty mother.

Julie also plans to use the time to figure out why her perfectly planned life has gone terribly amiss. They’ve barely hit the road when a frantic call from Julie’s mother hijacks their best laid plans. Uncle Tony “Lucky” Costa is missing. Resumen del Editor
A grand baronial house on Loch Ness, a quirky small-town bookseller, and a single mom looking for a fresh start all come together in this witty and warm-hearted novel by New York Times best-selling author Jenny Colgan.
Desperate to escape from London, single mother Zoe wants to build a new life for herself and her four-year-old son Hari. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where shouting football fans keep them awake all night. Hari’s dad, Jaz, a charismatic but perpetually broke DJ, is no help at all. But his sister, Surinder, comes to Zoe’s aid, hooking her up with a job as far away from the urban crush as possible: a bookshop on the banks of Loch Ness. And there’s a second job to cover housing: Zoe will be an au pair for three children at a genuine castle in the Scottish Highlands.
But while Scotland is everything Zoe dreamed of - clear skies, brisk fresh air, blessed quiet - everything else is a bit of a mess. The Urquart family castle is grand, but crumbling, the childrens’ single dad is a wreck, and the kids have been kicked out of school and left to their own devices. Zoe has her work cut out for her, and is determined to rise to the challenge, especially when she sees how happily Hari has taken to their new home.
With the help of Nina, the friendly local bookseller, Zoe begins to put down roots in the community. Are books, fresh air, and kindness enough to heal this broken family - and her own...?

Historia
Morag MacIntyre is a Scottish lass from the remote islands that make up the northernmost reaches of the UK. She’s also a third-generation pilot, the heir apparent to an island plane service she runs with her grandfather. The islands—over 500 dots of windswept land that reach almost to Norway—rely on their one hardworking prop plane to deliver mail, packages, tourists, medicine, and the occasional sheep. As the keeper of this vital lifeline, Morag is used to landing on pale golden beaches and tiny grass airstrips, whether during great storms or on bright endless summer nights.

Delightful
The unique characters in this book keep following me around in my heart. Zoe, a single mom of a four-year-old who has never spoken a word, has to move out of her shabby London apartment. She gets hired on as a nanny in a huge old mansion on the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland, as well as taking on a part time job as a mobile book shop operator. Two of her three charges have been expelled from school for fighting, and their often absent single father has basically given up on getting any kind of routine or order in their lives. The grumpy old housekeeper serves as the uninvolved babysitter between nannies. The struggles and tragedies they all face try Zoe’s patience to a frazzle, but her determination to make the best of things and bring joy to this household are inspiring. A lovely story.

Lovely story, just lovely!!
The Series: I inadvertently began this series with "500 Miles From You" but loved it so much I had to have more of these characters. Any story line that has me both laughing and crying, nodding in agreement and talking back to the characters or narrative is a winner! I absolutely adored the writer's style and wit and the characters' personalities were well-developed and consistent. Narration was lovely and I appreciated and enjoyed proper Scottish pronunciations and inflections.
Book 2: Zoe's story was very well woven into Nina's, was complex enough to always be interesting and compelling and I didn't find it to be predictable. I often found myself (in all three books) staring out into space during a description of a beautiful scene of the Highlands and sighing with the beauty in my mind's eye. The author has an exceptional ability to bring the magnificence of Scotland's landscape to the listener/reader.
The story and characters were truly standouts in my opinion - and I really, really wish there were more to this series. Hear me, Jenny?? :)
