Publisher's summary

Cam Folde has overcome his weaknesses, but his future remains uncertain.

During his first year at the Ephemeral Academy, Cam grew far in his Ephemeral Mastery, becoming a person of significance. The eyes of the mighty are now upon him, and they promise him wealth and even marriage into their houses should he offer them loyalty.

Yet, Cam has other concerns. He no longer trusts his sponsor, Rainen Winder—the Wilde Sage—whose usage of Cam and his friends has seen them almost die on too many occasions. A dilemma exists, however, because breaking with the Wilde Sage will also result in Cam's expulsion from the academy.

Needing wisdom, Cam seeks advice from several of his instructors—the new master of the sword, Cinder Shade, and his wife—but before he can enact their counsel, a fresh challenge becomes apparent.

A mythical Realm—deadly beyond measure—proves all too real…and an unprepared Light Squad must survive it.

EXCELLENT CONTINUATION

not really any negatives, more preference than anything, I just have a low tolerance for political schemes/machinations/manipulatation overt or covert well at least the kind that isn't quelled right away. anyway aside from my pet peeve the books is very enjoyable .

Another good story

I am really happy that the storyline progressed along with little interruption. I can't wait to see what happens in book 3

Hollow, Tell don’t Show.

I was really looking forward to this book, ever since finishing the first one, but was left pretty dissatisfied overall. Firstly, if you haven’t listened to the previous book since its original release, I can’t recommend more to going back and giving it a read-listen. I did not do this, and spent the entirety of the book confused on just how the magic and cultivation in this story worked, and unfortunately the author never rehashes how the system works in this book, or on their personal website. Cultivation aside, the majority of the book ends up feeling like jovial conversation between two or more of the characters, into time jumps of days or weeks, and you are just told that the characters improve without really seeing much of that. After about 3-4 rinse and repeats of this, you get short moments conflict that really lack any weight or stakes, before going back to the same minimum depth conversations and time jumps.
