Fifty years after her death, Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe still beguiles the world, her image enthralling millions. Many books have attempted to explain her allure and tell her story, but none has succeeded as well as this work by acclaimed biographer Donald Spoto. Spoto’s exhaustive research uncovers a conspiracy of silence, allowing him to present the facts, free from often-repeated myths and speculation. Granted access to more than thirty-five thousand pages of formerly sealed files containing letters, diaries, appointment books, and other intimate papers, he also interviewed nearly two hundred people who had never before spoken on record.

Elton John is as much loved for his outrageous personality and witty outspokenness as for his music. Such shamelessness and sheer silliness rivals anything uttered by punk rockers, yet it is so typically Elton: honest and intemperate. Tragedy and heartbreak have played a large part in his life. Behind the parties, the hedonism, the lavish stage costumes, and silly glasses lies a more somber story. Between disputes with managers, legal wranglings, public breakups, and divorce, John has been faced with serious health problems and drug addictions.

Beginning with Presley's army service in Germany in 1958 and ending with his death in Memphis in 1977, Careless Love chronicles the unraveling of the dream that once shone so brightly, homing in on the complex playing-out of Elvis' relationship with his Machiavellian manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

Resumen del Editor
Just in time for the Chairman's centennial, the endlessly absorbing sequel to James Kaplan's best-selling Frank: The Voice - finally the definitive biography that Frank Sinatra, justly termed "The Entertainer of the Century", deserves and requires. Like Peter Guralnick on Elvis, Kaplan goes behind the legend to give us the man in full, in his many guises and aspects: peerless singer, (sometimes) powerful actor, business mogul, tireless lover, and associate of the powerful and infamous.
In 2010's Frank: The Voice, James Kaplan, in rich, distinctive, compulsively understandable prose, told the story of Frank Sinatra's meteroic rise to fame, subsequent failures, and reinvention as a star of the stage and screen. The story of "Ol' Blue Eyes" continues with Sinatra: The Chairman, picking up the day after Frank claimed his Academy Award in 1954 and had reestablished himself as the top recording artist in music. Frank's life post-Oscar was incredibly dense: In between recording albums and singles, he often shot four or five movies a year; did TV show and nightclub appearances; started his own label, Reprise; and juggled his considerable commercial ventures (movie production, the restaurant business, even prizefighter management) alongside his famous and sometimes notorious social activities and commitments.

Phil Spector, born in the Bronx in 1940, grew up an outsider despised by his peers. But he formed a band, and had a number-one hit with "To Know Him Is to Love Him". He quickly became the top producer of early rock and roll and the originator of such girl groups as the Ronettes. Hit followed hit, and for all of them he used a new recording style called the "wall of sound". But the reign of the boy-man who owned pop music was doomed, and Spector spiraled into paranoid isolation and peculiar behavior.

They stand at the apex of the great age of songwriting, the creators of the classic Broadway musicals Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, whose songs have never lost their popularity or emotional power. Even before they joined forces, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II had written dozens of Broadway shows, but together they pioneered a new art form: the serious musical play.

What was it like to be John Lennon? What was it like to be the castoff child, the clown at school, the middle-class suburban boy who pretended to be a working-class hero? How did it feel to have one of the most recognizable singing voices in the world but to dislike it so much he always wanted to disguise it? Being John Lennon is not about the whitewashed Prince of Peace of “Imagine” legend - because that was only a small part of him. The John Lennon depicted in this book is a much more kaleidoscopic figure, sometimes almost a collision of different characters.

The age of the rock star, like the age of the cowboy, has passed. Like the cowboy, the idea of the rock star lives on in our imaginations. What did we see in them? Swagger. Recklessness. Sexual charisma. Damn-the-torpedoes self-belief. A certain way of carrying themselves. Good hair. Interesting shoes. Talent we wished we had. What did we want of them? To be larger than life but also like us. To live out their songs. To stay young forever. No wonder many didn't stay the course.

In 1992, Victor Bockris' celebrated biography was the first to recognize Richards' pivotal role in the legend of the Rolling Stones. Now that book on rock's most incredible survivor has been expanded. Here are the true facts behind Richards' battles with his demons: the women, the drugs and the love-hate relationship with Jagger. His struggle with heroin and his status as the rock star most likely to die in the 1970s. His scarcely believable rebirth as a family man in the 1980s. Illuminated with revealing quotes and thoughtful insights into the man behind the band that goes on forever.

Caddyshack is one of the most beloved comedies of all time, a classic snobs vs. slobs story of working-class kids and the white-collar buffoons that make them haul their golf bags in the hot summer sun. It has sex, drugs, and one very memorable candy bar, but the movie we all know and love didn't start out that way, and everyone who made it certainly didn't have the word classic in mind as the cameras were rolling.

From the moment their hugely influential 1978 debut landed, Van Halen set a high bar for the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, creating an entirely new style of post-'60s hard rock and becoming the quintessential rock band of the 1980s. But the high-flying success was fraught with difficulty, as Eddie struggled with alcohol and drug addiction while simultaneously battling David Lee Roth over the musical direction of the band, eventually taking the band in an entirely new direction with Sammy Hagar and scaling new heights, before that iteration of Van Halen disintegrated.

It was the best of times and the worst of times for Hollywood before the war. The box office was booming, and the studios’ control of talent and distribution was as airtight as could be hoped. But the industry’s relationship with Washington was decidedly uneasy - hearings and investigations into allegations of corruption and racketeering were multiplying, and hanging in the air was the insinuation that the business was too foreign, too Jewish, too "un-American" in its values and causes. Could an industry this powerful in shaping America’s mind-set really be left in the hands of this crew?

I have never listened to a 40-hour book before and probably never again, but I would certainly read Sinatra, at least, once again if not twice more. Kaplin not only dug into the life of Sinatra but made mini digs, that is, some background information about everyone who interacted with Sinatra. Readers got to learn many naughty things about these characters that were in and out of Sinatra's life. And I believe that's what made this bio so darn interesting. Instead of dragging through the 40 hours, I flew through and was sorry when it ended. Corren did a great job bringing the book to life. I really recommend this book, mostly because of the author.

a group of men and women that defined a generation of young and old. singers, song writers, musicians, actors, producers, directors all choreographed in the words and music of a gifted writer who retells a story already recorded in history. Done in a style without guile. Creates an intimacy with readers about a history and a time reminiscent of camelot its king and and loyal nights. if life imitates art, what an incredible pallette of color Frank Sinatra chose for the artform he embodied

A very well written work!
This was a very good book. It was an honest and open story about a singer who was loved and revered by many people.
I liked the stories about Frank that portrayed him not only as a wealthy man, but also a human. In other words, you can feel his suffering at difficult times in his life. These are things that the public only surmises but never knows.
This is a good book and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story of a most iconic singer who impacted the lives of many people.

Narrator sounds like he dislikes Sinatra!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a great book. The first part of this bio, The Voice, was just as well written. Both books are the last word on Sinatra (and Jonathan Schwartz agrees). But... the audiobooks are very different. The narrator of the first book, The Voice, Rob Shapiro, seemed interested in the subject and his warm tone towards the subject made it all stronger. The narrator of THIS book, however, sounds more like Lee Mortimer than a fan or even a neutral observer of Sinatra. He carries a snide undertone re: the singer throughout. Maybe it's just a mannerism?
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Donald Corren?
Rob Shapiro. Absolutely.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was very disappointed in the narration.
Any additional comments?
Thank you!

40 hours of biography.
I enjoyed this a lot. I first listened to The Voice, by the same author, and after 60 hours of Frank, I both feel I know the guy, and I also don't know him at all. Surprisingly enough, this book seems to end rather abruptly. You get to Sinatra's first retirement, in 1971, and then the last 27 years of his life get almost nothing. How he met Barbara Sinatra, what his hundreds of concerts were like, even what the singers that recorded Duets with him are not interviewed. If you want to know about the first 56 years of The Chairman's life, these 2 books are fantastic. The reader is great, and it really is an interesting subject.

Remarkable biography
James Kaplan does a remarkable job documenting the life of this highly complicated and deeply talented man. The audio book is over 40 hours but it held my interest.
