Learn to make your audience actually hear you, and

The author does really well to explain that public speaking isn't just about giving the audience a whole lot of information, it's about making it a memorable moment in time and that is to be kept in mind when preparing your presentation. I especially liked the part of this book when the author shared a story of how he helped someone overcome their fear of public speaking and one day that person sent him a video of himself after a presentation and he didn't even recognise him as he had nailed it and he was like a different person.

Public Speaking - why we fear it and how to do it

I love the book. It is such an informative book with lots of science backing, but then the second part presents an amazing strategy and techniques for how to present. Once you finish the book, you have a clear picture and plan of what to do next in order to tackle the fear of public speaking.

Relax - Be playful, informative and entertaining

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Filled with great anecdotes, scientific discoveries and practical exercises, this book tackles the fear many of us have with public speaking by helping us overcome this fear. In Part 1, I personally loved the "Ruler of the World" exercise as a confidence booster and a way of calming the mind and controlling nerves - to be used when needed. I was fascinated by the scientific research which helped to bring a rational approach to learning skills needed for successful public speaking - rather than be captured by fear.

Part 2 offers practical advice for designing and structuring a talk and offers a range of tools to ensure the presentation is engaging and meets expectations. For example, the use of mind mapping to establish the structure of the presentation, and to slot in ideas as they come to you. This is explained very well. The art of keeping people's attention is also covered - tips on keeping information simple and interesting, and building rapport with your audience, are offered.

I recommend this book if you are looking for a fresh approach to improving your public speaking skills. Anyone can master delivery of a great presentation with the advice and exercises in this book.

Useful advices!

I am not new to public speaking, and I still learned a lot from Derek's book. Really worthful advices for different levels of experiences, great examples and techniques! Derek's narration is engaging and inspiring.

I Wish I Had This Years Ago

This audiobook is hugely helpful whether for a new or experienced public speaker. I highly recommend it.

Great help with my presentation

Listening to the audiobook prepared me for a conference where I had the privilege of doing a presentation. The book contained a wealth of information that helped me remain calm and avoid delivering a "killed by PowerPoint" presentation. The information and examples were presented in a practical manner, and I greatly benefited from listening to the book.

The author speaks himself in this inspiring audiobook. I really enjoyed all the examples and anecdotes that the author gives showing his vast experience and success in public speaking. It's always good to learn from the best and Derek is one of them.

It works!

I was scheduled to speak at a conference with 300-400 participants on a panel. I have done this in the past and sometimes when I’m in senior level management meetings or board meetings, I get nervous and miss all of the things I really wanted to say or I stumble (completely freeze up) and people know I did. I loved Derek’s comments about everyone has something they can improve upon and you need to communicate effectively so that you don’t waste people’s time.

I learned effective approaches on body language, mind mapping your presentation, and effective storytelling techniques. With the purchase of the Audibles version, I also received a download of the Rapid Learning Accelerator to listen in conjunction with the book to help with controlling my anxiety and fear which can creep up in the most inopportune times.

Since purchasing of the book and doing the nightly mind visualization techniques, I am more effectively able to control my fear and deliver a great presentation. I wanted to wait to provide my review till after the conference speaking engagement, and I was pleased about how many people came up to me after the presentation to tell me how good it was. My spouse who was in the audience also was impressed by my lack of “ums”, the powerful use of the pause and imagery for the audience. He said they were captivated and focused when I spoke. I did get nervous prior, and used the Rapid Learning Accelerator to help calm my nerves for which that was the most important thing I wanted to learn.

I loved that this book was very comprehensive, and I learned a lot of new communication techniques of not only what to do, but also what NOT to do. It also took a holistic approach about truly managing my fears. It was well worth the investment in time and cost. With this book and learnings, Derek became my personal coach, and I appreciate him for sharing his expertise in a manner that can truly help people deliver amazing performances. Thank you!

A well researched and useful book.

This book is well researched,
It contains tangible tools the listener/reader can download and practice the techniques to facilitate overcoming the fear associated with public speaking.
The author does a great job of breaking down the steps needed to achieve success.
The handling of complex material is clearly explained and the use of scenarios and stories are cleverly inserted to simplify and drive home important points.
Derek inserts levity into his book as well. One of my favorite quotes from his book, “One of the worst things to experience in business is death by presentation delivered by a gifted powerpoint hypnotist.”
