Charles Baudelaire est né le 9 avril 1821 à Paris ; il y mourut le 31 août 1867, emporté par une atroce maladie, avant même d'atteindre à sa cinquantième année. Mais à ce corps misérable survécut un génie qui continue d'illuminer la poésie d'une sombre lumière. Avec Baudelaire finit le romantisme, et ce "frisson nouveau" qu'il apporta avec lui et dont Victor Hugo le félicitait, inaugure la poésie moderne. C'est une théorie poétique aussi vivace que purent l'être celles de la Pléiade et du Classicisme français qui se dégage, comme un parfum spirituel, de ces Fleurs du Mal publiées en volume, pour la première fois le 25 juin 1857.
Paul Valéry est né à Sète le 30 octobre 1871 ; il est mort à Paris le 19 juillet 1945. Essayiste et poète, il est aussi exceptionnel ici que là. C'est un écrivain qui méprise les prestiges faciles de la littérature : l'inconscience bavarde et la satisfaction de parler de soi. Poète, Valéry l'est comme rarement on le fut : froidement. Un poème est pour lui une savante machine verbale plutôt destinée à provoquer une émotion qu'à exposer celle de l'auteur. Ainsi sa poésie n'est-elle jamais une poésie de circonstance, ni une poésie inspirée. C'est une "poésie pure" qui a pour thème principal l'événement spirituel dont elle se nourrit en même temps qu'elle le provoque.
