Victorian London was notorious for its pickpockets. But in the country houses of the elite, gentleman burglars, art thieves and con men preyed on the rich and titled. Wealthy victims—with their pride and reputation at stake—would never go to the police. What they needed was a society insider, one of their own, a person of discretion and finely tuned powers of observation.

Resumen del Editor
Number one UK best seller.
“A thoughtful, funny, companionable novel...executed with verve.” (London Times)
The author of the acclaimed Crooked Heart returns with a comic, charming, and surprisingly timely portrait of a once-pioneering suffragette trying to find her new passion in post-WWI-era London.
It's 1928. Riffling through a cupboard, Matilda Simpkin comes across a small wooden club - an old possession that she hasn’t seen for more than a decade. Immediately, memories come flooding back to Mattie - memories of a thrilling past, which only further serve to remind her of her chafingly uneventful present. During the Women's Suffrage Campaign, she was a militant who was jailed five times and never missed an opportunity to return to the fray. Now in middle age, the closest she gets to the excitement of her old life is the occasional lecture on the legacy of the militant movement.
After running into an old suffragette comrade who has committed herself to the wave of fascism, Mattie realizes there is a new cause she needs to fight for and turns her focus to a new generation of women. Thus the Amazons are formed, a group created to give girls a place to not only exercise their bodies, but their minds, and ignite in young women a much-needed interest in the world around them. But when a new girl joins the group, sending Mattie’s past crashing into her present, every principle Mattie has ever stood for is threatened.
Old Baggage is a funny and bittersweet portrait of a woman who has never given up the fight and the young women who are just discovering it.

Historia
Ralph and Anna Eldred are an exemplary couple, devoting themselves to doing good. 30 years ago as missionaries in Africa, the worst that could happen did. Shattered by their encounter with inexplicable evil, they returned to England, never to speak of it again. But when Ralph falls into an affair, Anna finds no forgiveness in her heart, and 30 years of repressed rage and grief explode, destroying not only a marriage but also their love, their faith, and everything they thought they were.

In name and by birth, Celia was a Dunne. She had inherited the beautiful old family home by the Rydd Water – but was she bound to live her life by the principles of her predecessors? Was there some hidden restraint that compelled her to heed the past? Celia’s house is a moving and poignant story of the struggle between old and young: the older generation anxious to preserve the values they have helped create while their children are determined at all costs to make lives of their own.

Dorothy Hare, the dutiful daughter of a rector in Suffolk, spends her days performing good works and cultivating good thoughts, pricking her arm with a pin when a bad thought arises. She does her best to reconcile her father’s fanciful view of his position in the world with such realities as the butcher’s bill. But even Dorothy’s strength has its limits, and one night, as she works feverishly on costumes for the church-school play, she blacks out. When she comes to, she finds herself on a London street, clad in a sleazy dress and unaware of her identity.

The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

The other, stranger memories begin nine years ago, when she was 10 and gate-crashed an odd funeral in the mansion near her grandmother's house. Polly's just beginning to recall the sometimes marvelous, sometimes frightening adventures she embarked on with Tom Lynn after that. And then she did something terrible, and everything changed. But what did she do? Why can't she remember? Polly must uncover the secret, or her true love - and perhaps Polly herself - will be lost.

“New York is a city of things unnoticed,” a young reporter named Gay Talese wrote sixty years ago. He would spend the rest of his legendary career defying that statement by celebrating the people most reporters overlooked, understanding that it was through these minor characters that the epic story of New York and America unfolded. Inspired by Herman Melville’s great short story “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” Talese now revisits the unforgettable “nobodies” he has profiled in his celebrated career—from the New York Times’s anonymous obituary writer to Frank Sinatra’s entourage.

Gets 5 stars even if it isn’t my favorite Evans
I’ve listened and re-listened to Lisa Evans’ Crooked Heart and Their Finest Hour and a Half. Both books are piercing and realistic depictions of wartime Britain, both of them surprisingly funny given how determined both are to focus on the dourness of that age. In this novel, Old Baggage, we get the backstory to Mattie Simpkin, the unforgettable former suffragette and hunger striker who featured so hugely in Crooked Heart. Lissa Evans reveals exactly how Mattie escaped the usual fate of a well-bred girl in pre Edwardian England, that is, to become a barely educated breeder for some scion of her social caste. Being a bit of an old baggage myself, I particularly appreciated how Evans tells the story of Mattie’s youth in flash-back, choosing to focus instead on the lessons the indomitable Miss Simpkin is now learning in her late middle-age. Surely this is one hero who will never hang up her spurs, or so we think at the start of the book. But it would seem even Mattie still has a few things to learn about people.
The only reason this won’t be my favorite Evans may be my fault: I wanted more! Key plot developments learned in the last chapter were handled as quick information dumps, when they merited a long chapter (or two) in their own right. That aside, Old Baggage is another reason for me to rush out and buy everything Lissa Evans ever writes. The only historical novel I’ve enjoyed as much as Evan’s work was Helen Simonson’s The Summer Before the War.
And the narrator, Jane Copland, was superb.
