Ödipus ist eine antike Tragödie. Das Orakel von Delphi sagt Laios, dem König von Theben voraus, dass sein Sohn ihn töten und mit seiner Mutter Iokaste Kinder zeugen werde. Um dies zu vermeiden, gibt er seinen neugeborenen Sohn an einen Hirten, um ihn auszusetzen. Dieser gibt ihn aber stattdessen einem befreundeten Hirten in Korinth. Schließlich wird er aber von dem König und der Königin von Korinth aufgenommen und erhält den Namen Ödipus. Als er jedoch erfährt, dass das Orakel vorausgesagt hat, dass er seinen Vater tötet, verlässt er Korinth. Auf der Reise streitet er mit einem anderen Reisenden und erschlägt ihn. Er weiß jedoch nicht, dass es sich dabei um Laios, seinen leiblichen Vater handelt. Als er nach Theben kommt, empfängt ihn die dort wütende Sphinx und stellt ihm ein Rätsel. Nachdem er dies gelöst hat, verlässt die Sphinx Theben und Ödipus wird als Befreier gefeiert. Er erhält seine Mutter zur Frau und zeugt mit ihr 4 Kinder. Der Orakelspruch hat sich dabei bewahrheitet, ohne dass Ödipus dies weiß. Als eine Seuche ausbricht, wird das Orakel befragt. Die Seuche wird erst aufhören, wenn der Mörder von Laios gefasst wurde...
Übersetzung: Franz Blei, Bearbeitung und Regie: Karl Peter Biltz, Musik: Karl Sczuka. André Paul Guillaume Gide (1869-1951) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Er war ab 1909 Herausgeber der "Nouvelle Revue Francaise' und erhielt 1947 den Literaturnobelpreis. Sophokles (497-406 v.Chr.) war einer der größten Dichter der griechischen Tragödie der Antike. Seine berühmtesten Werke sind "König Ödipus' und "Antigone".
