Mais l'horreur même de cette mort ne l'en distraira pas. Jusqu'au bout, il sera lucide.
L'été à Alger. Description psychologique d'une ville sans passé qui ignore le sens du mot vertu, mais qui a sa morale et où les hommes trouvent "pendant toute leur jeunesse une vie à la mesure de leur beauté". Le désert. Partant de la leçon des grands peintres toscans, l'auteur s'approche de cette "double vérité du corps et de l'instant... qui doit nous enchanter mais périr à la fois". Il découvre que l'accord qui unit un être à sa vie, dans un monde dont la beauté doit périr, est la "double conscience de son désir de durée et son destin de mort". Notre salut est sur la terre où le bonheur peut naître de l'absence d'espoir.
