With her mighty wings spread wide and Ardent Blade aflame, Saint Celestine is the living embodiment of the God-Emperor’s wrath. Her halo blazes like a star upon the smog-wreathed, blood-soaked battlefields of the 41st Millennium; its holy light leading the faithful to victory time and time again. As heretics and daemons tear at her flesh, she calls down fires of retribution from on high to smite the wicked and unrighteous. If she is to fall in battle, none should mourn as she is Celestine, the Living Saint, and death is her duty.

Publisher's summary
An Adepta Sororitas audiobook.
When a mission of Battle Sisters return to a desolate world to reconsecrate a remote Ecclesiarchy outpost, they soon discover an implacable foe - the fearless, soulless necrons - waiting in the darkness....
Listen to It Because:
Discover what happened after the massacre at Sanctuary 101, where Sisters of Battle were decimated in the first appearance of the necrons. This novel delves into the aftermath, pitting the devout Sisters against the ancient aliens once more.
The Story:
The Sisters of Battle are the Emperor's most devout worshippers, fierce warriors preaching the purity of the Imperium and scourging their enemies with bolter and flamer. On a distant world, the Ecclesiarchy outpost of Sanctuary 101 was wiped out by an implacable foe - the fearless, soulless necrons. Now, a mission of the Sisterhood has returned to reconsecrate the site - but the metallic nightmares still lurk in the darkness, guarding a secret that has lain dormant for millennia. A vicious battle will be fought, one that can only end in the total destruction of the unrelenting xenos or the annihilation of the proud Adepta Sororitas.

Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate. Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication.

To me, its better than the first book for sure!
the first book was kind of a grind at times. It had a lot of non-battle related story elements which is fine buy I prefer a bit more battle in my novels. This book is better in this regard and it gave me some insight into how Necrons think and operate. It's a good book and you actually don't NEED to read the first book but it will definitely help.

I quite enjoyed the story. It holds up very well with time, showing the interaction of the sororitas faith within the 40k setting. The plot leads you with some questions that resolve differently than I expected, a nice suprise that was both fun for me to discover and fit very well within the story. The competing factions are presented in a way that is fitting given the lore that followed the authoring of this book as well. Enjoyed it very much

I was not familiar with James Swallow before this book but, other than some minor quibbles, I am a fan of his work so far. I have heard Emma Gregory on a few other works and she also turns in a solid performance. Overall, if you are a sororitas fan then you will enjoy this book.

Performance elevates the story
As a fan of the sisters and the necron I have a bias to enjoy this book. That said, I greatly enjoyed the experience of following these two factions clashing. I don't believe I will carry any of the characters with me, as they are all rather two dimensional. The characters feel more like archetypes meant to play roles in the plot rather than people and the events of the book are pretty low stakes in the view of the overall imperium.
Where this book shines is in the performance. Emma makes these characters come to life, and her voice/accent is absolutely perfect for portraying these zealous women. Come for the robot v nun battles, stay for the performance.

It was a moving and well written tale
I’m new to Warhammer 40k so I wanted to hear a story from a faction they I have been drawn to, the adeptas saroritas. The story was engrossing and expertly narrated. I loved the characters. The subplots were engrossing and I mourned the loss some key characters. Highly recommend.

A slow burn but a well told story.
The pacing on this one is a bit on the slow side, but done so intentionally and pays big dividends near the end when everything comes together.
Also you really get a sense of the cast due to its pacing.
