Publisher's summary

Three books of best-selling military sci-fi action. If you love heroes and starships, you will love to stand with Commander Jacob T. Grimm. You’re in the Navy now!

Idealistic Navy Lieutenant Jacob Grimm just wanted to honor his mother’s sacrifice in the last great war. When he’s forced to return fire and destroy a squadron of ships to save his own, he thinks he’s the hero....

Until they discover the ships are full of children.

Disgraced and denied promotion, Jacob’s career is over. That is until the head of ONI needs a disposable officer to command a battered destroyer on the rim.

There’s just one problem: Interceptor hasn’t had a CO in months, and the ship is a mess. Worse, the system he’s assigned to is corrupt and on the verge of all-out civil war with the Alliance.

However, no one told Jacob he was disposable.

Pirates, smugglers, and Caliphate spies complicate the situation and one captain with an old ship can’t enforce the law, let alone stop anyone.

The single greatest discovery of all time is about to change intergalactic politics forever. If Jacob doesn’t find a way to succeed, then it won’t just be the end of the Alliance, it will be the end of freedom for humanity.

From USA Today best-selling author Jeffery H. Haskell, you won't want to miss the special edition omnibus of books one to three in the hit Grimm's War series.

"Against All Odds is classic space fleet military science fiction in the tradition of David Weber, with memorable characters and thrilling action. Haskell is a new shining star in the genre." (Rick Partlow, author of Contact Front)

Classic military science fiction

I found the story to be enjoyable and look forward to continuing the series. I love classic military science fiction such as Starship Troopers, Dread Empire's Fall, The Forever War, The Expanse, etc. This series reminds me of Expeditionary Force, but better as the story has a faster pace and without all of the unnecessary filler. The battles feel accurate and the leap of faith required for the “Star Lanes” concept is not an issue. Character development is not too bad. It seems like there are hints in the third book of trying to expand upon who the characters are and to prevent them from being one dimensional. Narration was very good as well.

Some of the negative aspects were what I would call a lazy universe construction. I can’t remember which author said it (maybe William Gibson), but it is that much of science fiction is not about the future, but is a commentary (or product) of the present. So current cultural tropes are projected onto the future. Radical Islam as the bad guys, Asian people as being different and separate, Germanic people as being technologically advanced, Russian as being corrupt and western (or American) society as having the moral superiority. The other negative (which sort of comes with some military science fiction) is a strong authoritarian (almost Fascist) bent (military ignoring civilian rule, single military leadership vs democracy, anti-free press). I just think it was just a bit too in your face and would have been more enjoyable if not just copy-and-pasted from today. Also the main character Jason Grimm occasionally drifts off into longish inner monologues about the military, duty and how much he loves his job that doesn’t add anything to the story or character. It's just a bit over the top.

Love Jacob Grimm

Grimms story is an interesting take on the underdog proving his worth. This series only gets better the more books you get in.

A very enjoyable story…

A very enjoyable story with excellent narration and without all the woke nonsense. Thank you, Mr. Haskell.

Great value

I enjoyed it, like I said a great value

Book 1 I really liked
Book 2 it was OK
Book 3 I didn’t really like book 3 it was overly dramatic and the storyline could’ve been done better

Book 4 is not included in this box set, but it was probably my favorite book in the series so far

Book 5 it was OK

Not the best science fiction story I’ve ever read, but enjoyable to listen to in an afternoon

Great Scifi

The author does an excellent job of making you care about every character including enjoying the painful demise of many of the bad guys. For the most part, the narration was well done and engaging. I found that I enjoyed listening to the first 3 books of this series of 6 books with anticipation for each chapter. My only regret is that I will have to buy books 4, 5, and 6 outright knowing that these books will ultimately be included in a single 3-book combo later on. But given how much I have enjoyed these first 3 books, it is an easy purchase to make. But to listen to these books now I don't think is a waste of any credits at all.

Book one establishes the main character, LT Grimm as an upstart United Systems Alliance Naval Careerist whose right decisions lead to a horrific outcome that nearly cost him his career. He goes from a potential leader to an easy scapegoat. Resigned to this fact, but not cowed by it, he dedicates himself to doing his duty to the best of his ability. Which, in the case of his new ship, the Interceptor, is a handful. The author does a very solid job of keeping the story moving forward with an elegant writing method that I found refreshing and engaging. The cadence of the story was smooth, accurate, and interesting. Book 2 of the series sees our hero and his crew called upon to put it all on the line with the only reward being a long prison term. I found myself unable to stop listening to the story. That is, for me, rare. Book 3 brings back our hero and his crew for all to enjoy. The story was engaging and at some points, downright exciting.

Overall, I loved these first three books and I am willing to use 3 of my precious credits to get the next three in the series.

Pro's - Very solid storytelling with an engaging plot, captivating universe, good characters, great attention to the details, heart, and a plot with very few holes. Overall, good narration as well.
Con's - The narrator sometimes got his character voices mixed up.

It's been a good listen and I look forward to listening to more.
