Story
Estevar Borros, one of the legendary sword-fighting magistrates known as the Greatcoats and the king's personal investigator of the supernatural, is no stranger to tales of ghosts and demons. When the fractious monks of the abbey rumoured to be the birthplace of the gods begin warring over claims of a new pantheon arising, the frantic abbot summons him to settle the dispute. But Estevar has his own problems: a near-fatal sword wound from his last judicial duel, a sworn knight who claims he has proof the monks are consorting with demons, a diabolical inquisitor, and a mysterious young woman.

Fun Story In The World Of The Greatcoats
- By Scott S. on 04-19-24
Publisher's summary
A riotous novel takes readers deeper into the politics and intrigue of the NYT bestselling Malazan Empire
After decades of warfare, Malazan forces are poised to consolidate the Quon Tali mainland. Yet it is at this moment that Emperor Kellanved orders a new, some believe foolhardy campaign: the invasion of Falar that lies far to the north . . .
And to fight on this new front, a rag-tag army raised from orphaned units and broken squads is been brought together under Fist Dujek, and joined by a similarly motley fleet under the command of the Emperor himself.
So the Malazans head north, only to encounter an unlooked-for and most unwelcome threat. Something unspeakable and born of legend has awoken and will destroy all who stand in its way. Most appalled by this is the Empire’s untested High Mage, Tayschrenn. All too aware of the true nature of this ancient horror, he fears his own inadequacies when the time comes to confront it.
Yet confront it he must.
Falar is itself far from defenceless. Its priests possess a weapon–rumoured to be a gift from the sea god, Mael–a weapon so terrifying it has not been unleashed for centuries. But two can play at that game, for the Emperor’s flagship is also believed to be not entirely of this world.
These are turbulent, treacherous and bloody times for all caught up in the forging of an Empire and so, amongst the Ice Wastes and in the archipelago of Falar, the Malazans must face two seemingly insurmountable tests, each one potentially the origin of their destruction . . .

Story
Getting assassinated sucks. Just ask Thomas, a man from Earth who made a few too many enemies. Or you could ask Lucian, the crown prince of another world who met a similar fate. But if you were to ask either of them, then you'd actually be asking the same man, as Thomas' soul was crammed into Lucian's body during their simultaneous assassinations. The Goddess who reincarnated him didn't do it for free, though. She tasked Lucian with the simple quest of saving the Almekian Kingdom from the brink of collapse.

Story
Sure, death by semi truck wasn’t fun, and being isekai’d into the sky was a rough entrance. But hey, I was alive. Reborn in a quaint little town in a magical world. I ended up rooming with a floppy-eared puppy girl and a bubbly hobgoblin who run a bookshop together. Found myself a job, too. Town sheriff! And I’m just in time, because orc gangsters are imposing a reign of fear over the residents, slowly crushing my roommates’ dreams for their bookshop.

A great continuation of a great series.
While less warfare then the chronicles the adventures of characters you’ll recognize from them is a very welcome addition to the overall story. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Another jewel
A masterpiece, page turner and a must read for Malazan fans. The rise of the inner circle has so many twists and Ian does a great work of telling a very entertaining story.

More like Erickson
This one seems a bit more like Erikson’s work. While it lacks the mystery and vagueness it does contain more characters and plot lines than the previous three and includes many more known characters from the book of the fallen. Goofy scenes with Jaghut and humans playing on dinosaur computers really kills it for me…
