Publisher's summary

The Singularity - the merger of man and machine into a greater whole - is finally within humanity's grasp. When programmer Jeff Lawing gets the opportunity to join Singularity Online, the world's first realistic VRMMO and the testing ground that will lead to the Singularity, he leaps to accept.

Singularity is much more realistic and darker than Jeff had imagined, though. As a Sorcerer, his arcane magic is limited only by his imagination, allowing him to craft powerful spells forged from his desires. As the only Sorcerer in the game, he'll need to carve his own path, with only an ancient specter as his guide.

Will his new powers be enough to see him through the deadliest training quest he's ever encountered or to protect him in a fallen realm filled with undead? Does the have the courage and passion he needs to seize the mantle of First Sorcerer?

the narrator has absolutely no inflection or excitibility In his tone made a good story really hard to listen to.

Starts slow, but patience prevails.

I'll preface this by saying that after finishing this book, I went ahead and dropped a couple of credits on the next two.

It took a bit for the MC to transition from a technical present day to one of myth and magic. That transition made for a slow read and had me tempted to switch to a different book. However, as the MC's immersion improved, so did the story. Maybe a future reread will help me to better appreciate those early parts.

The concept of death without consequence in a game, even early on, is not one I've ever cared for, even in a story. So, to see it get ramped up to 8 or 9 was an interesting, but unexpected change and I am curious to see how it is handled in the follow on books.

I enjoyed the narrator's performance. There were a few times where I thought I heard his eyes begin to glaze as he read the pseudo-science techno babble attempting to justify or explain magic. Magic is magical. I'm good with that, let's get on with the story.

interesting

A very interesting story, though it started off slow. The narrator did a good job, too.

very hard to start ,seems monotone

reviews were bashing narrator, whom lacks inflection especially beginning. the story progresses well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. after actually getting into it the narration either improved or bothered me less. its not terrible but still hard to start. however I'm glad I continued with it and recommend this book still.

Excellent

A good story, a great example for characters development. An intriguing premise for the story. Voice acting was about as good as could be expected.

pretty average overall

not bad, but not great. story was decent enough if a little bit predictable. hardest part for me was the narration in a old timer news castor inflection with last word in sentences drawn out and slightly lower pitch. if you've exhausted all other books this could be worth a go

Meh…

Story wasn’t bad but not nearly good enough to make me want to listen to the second part.

Starts slow, builds well, Narrator is hit and miss.

The author’s introduction to the world reminded me of a snake oil salesman but maybe that was the general idea. The Narrator did a fantastic job bringing the various characters to life and has a good range of voices but I almost stopped listening several times based on his “narration” voice. It’s monotonous and grating. Like he’s just reading from a script and would rather be anywhere else doing anything else. His character voices however, were fantastic. I really liked his range, inflections, tones, and the way he made them all feel different.
