Publisher's summary

A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over.

For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters.

Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end.

He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

Bandits, suspicious townsfolk, a mysterious pair of siblings, and a secret that lurks in the mountains all threaten John’s peace. It will take all of his considerable power to keep from burning everything to the ground.

Don't miss the start of the next great Fantasy LitRPG Series by Seth Ring, author of Nova Terra. Pre-order your copy today and explore a world whose secrets have been buried under decades of war.

About the Series: Mixing slice-of-life with epic fantasy action, mystery, magic, cultivation, and a broken game system that seems determined to make everything as hard as possible for the already overpowered protagonist, this LitRPG/GameLit series is perfect for those who enjoy exploring rich worlds and complex characters.

Pretty great

I really enjoyed the premise, skipping the whole general isekai story and telling the 'what then?' part.

It even got around the trope that I really despise in anime (protagonists pointlessly holding back) with a good explanation for why he's doing that - or rather a clue to it.

While I would prefer a larger focus on the...mage farming? I'll be picking up the next book.

One nitpick, could do without the 'classic' clueless about social norms protagonist, but that's very minor.

Well done

This is a great way to tell the story of an OP MC. The only issue that popped up was a brief period were the MC started acting like a child out of the blue. Good thing that did not last long. It was odd and did not fit the character at all.

Really enjoyed it

If I had to describe this book without spoilers, I would have to say it’s like one of those old westerns or martial arts movies where a stranger comes to a remote town and some people don’t take him seriously, but that changes when push comes to shove.

I might’ve missed John’s actual age but at the bare minimum he’s got to be in his 30s, probably older. It kinda got difficult to tell what his age was since one of the other characters is mistaken for his wife and I remember her age being 20. While I know that age gaps of more than 10 were sometimes common in medieval times, even just a hundred or two hundred years ago, I’ll still find it odd if anything progresses between the two. If I missed it and he’s actually in his late 20s or early 30s then my bad.

Aside from that small gripe, I don’t have any real complaints about this book. It’s a simple premise of the “someone from our regular world being transported to a litrpg world” but with an older and seasoned veteran, not quite settling down because he wants to, but I won’t spoil that part.

All in all, I’d recommend this book and I look forward to the next one.

Nice change of pace

Most books in this genre have the MC as slightly OP and working from the beginning to show how they become strong. In this book the MC is already at the top level basically and is trying to act normal. I really enjoyed the “most people don’t know who they are messing with” kind theme and every time they started to realize it how things changed. Hope for more soon
