Publisher's summary

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh's dangerous and beautiful world of archangels, vampires, and mortals has never faced a threat this cataclysmic . . .

Raphael and Elena are experiencing their first ever year of true peace. No war. No horrors of archangelic power. No nightmares given flesh. Until . . . the earth beneath the Refuge begins to tremble, endangering not only angelkind's precious and fragile young, but the very place that has held their most innocent safe for eons.

Amid the chaos, Elena's father suffers a violent heart attack that threatens to extinguish their last chance to heal the bonds between them and make sense of the ruins of their agonizing shared history.

Even as Elena battles grief, Raphael is torn from her side by the sudden disappearance of an archangel. But worse yet is to come. An Ancestor, an angel unlike any other, stirs from his Sleep to warn the Cadre of a darkness so terrible that it causes empires to fall and civilizations to vanish.

This time, even the Cadre itself may not be able to stop a ticking clock that is counting down at frightening speed . . .

Contains mature themes.

Perfect. Just absolutely perfect.

This was the book I have wanted since just after Archangel’s War. It was bright, brilliant, and healing, while, at the same time, it was a thrilling ride. Great narration, too, but this time the story was everything.

WOW

I hate reviews that say nothing but wow but here we are😅
WOW WOW WOW !
If the great great many time’s Grandfather is different I wonder how different his consort is.
This is very much an excellent read! BUT. It can be standalone but much richer if you read the whole series in order that leads to this mega story.

Nalini…girl, come put me back together 🤌🏽

I have listened and relistened to every book in this series more times than any sane person should. These characters are part of me. This book was…heart breaking, heart warming, heart healing. The story was phenomenal and Marduk. Yes. Just yes. Justine is always great. Her narration is so perfect and I love that she does the whole series. She stays true to each character and how they sound. Can’t wait to relisten again and again to this one.

I really love this series

4.25 Stars 🌟

It is always so nice to step back into a world that feels so very comfortable. Almost like putting on an old comfy sweater and sitting in front of a fireplace. That's how much I have enjoyed the world of Raphael and Elena. We are 16 books into this series and in some ways, it feels like we are much deeper than that. There has been so much history, so many things that we have experienced in their journey that the number 16 seems too small. Justine Eyre narrates this book and as usual, she has been a consistent voice of the series.

This book takes us back a little bit and even though 20 years have passed in their timeline, we get to see an old part of Elena's human life come back into play. Elena's father has a health scare, and it brings into focus exactly what being "immortal" is going to mean when those that she loves, her human family, continues to age while she doesn't.

In addition to this storyline, there are some unexplainable incidents happening in the world and the Archangels at first are not sure what is causing them. They are then forced to come together as a team to achieve the things necessary to save the world as they know it. We all know that each Archangel is an entity in itself and there are some extremely huge egos at play.

As usual, this book takes off immediately and I found myself completely immersed in the storyline - actually both storylines. I am always pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy these characters and the world that Ms. Singh has created. This addition was no different. As always, the book was over much too quickly, and I know find myself eagerly awaiting the next installment.

The end of an wonderful story arc

I didn’t realize the story arc would end this way! What a great transition after so much action and strife, love and loss.

I adore Nalini Singh’s books

The Guild Hunter series started my obsession with this author. I have read them all probably twice. This book leads to a possible ending point. I really hope not because this series is one that I would like to never stop reading!

Absolutely wonderful

No spoilers are in this review!

There were multiple times I was brought to tears during this book. I could feel Elena’s desperation to get to her father’s side and I’m so happy to see more of her family dynamic and their growth.

The author also did a wonderful job handling the time jump between the last book and this one. Not too many details but the new/existing relationships are hinted at the growth and changes that have occurred. I am really hoping the author is setting us up for Vivek to get his own book next!

As I am at a busy time at work and wouldn’t have the capacity to read the book first, I’m glad I didn’t wait and grabbed the audiobook as well. The narrator had a bit of a rasp or warble in their voice that surprised me at first, however by the end of the audiobook I no longer noticed. Either it got better or I got used to it.
