Resumen del Editor

Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Muller makes a great book even greater

Phenomenal depiction of the horror and monotony of war.

Paul Bäumer at 18 is convinced along with his classmates to join the WWI war effort. They meet an older soldier, Stanislaus Katczinsky or Kat, who becomes a mentor and helps them survive initially.

Overall the grisly descriptions and absolute hopelessness is relentless. It's easy to see why the Nazis banned and burned this book.

Frank Muller is one of my favorite narrators, and his work on this book made it even more incredible.

It's about much more than war

All Quiet on the Western Front reaches much farther than the battlefield and stretches to ages well beyond youth. There is much about the nature of life and the loneliness that comes with understanding that no one can truly know the depths of our experiences... also, how do we live during times when all actions are futile, when the world becomes a prison-- such situations and realizations occur again and again through life, and the book intensifies this understanding because it takes place in horrific circumstances.

It's easy to see why the Nazis banned and burned the book. Not many books are so eloquently anti-war, both in overt statements and also structured into the story. Hitler didn't want citizens or soldiers to know the truth of war, or be exposed to questioning of authority and breeches of discipline.

I don't know German, but this translation is often poetic. The excellent narrator senses and brings out the beauty of such passages.

The horrors of war

A very brutal look at the horrors of war through the eyes of a soldier on the front lines in WWI. Utter despair crushes the remnants of hope as Baumer sees his fellow soldiers cut down on the primer of live. One moment he sees one of them go down and he reflects on all the wasted years of becoming so strong in his math skills just to parish this way. He also grapples with wounding a enemy soldier and watching him slowly die since he can't do anything to help the poor guy and reflects the whole time on how indifferent they are from one another. A very powerful read that has earned its honored place as one of the most loved classics on war of all time.

Required reading

Where does All Quiet on the Western Front rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the top ten books I have read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The protagonist and Kat. They both tried so hard to live through the horror and find ways to channel their emotions

Which scene was your favorite?

The first time he goes home and he tries to comprehend the dichotomy between the horrors on the front and the challenges of those behind the line. This book came out in 1928 yet war continues and young men and women continue to follow in the same emotional and physical footsteps. It is a sad fact that war continues.

If you could rename All Quiet on the Western Front, what would you call it?

The Horror of War

A sad story of death

Would you listen to All Quiet on the Western Front again? Why?

This book along with other like Born of the 4th of July should be required reading before enlisting. The story is memorable. This story is a sad but seemingly true sense of war, loss of life and hardships along the way. This story reminds us that we are all men who are dying. The differences between us and them become blured and the cause or meaning of the war become lost.

All is Quiet But Not At Ease

All Quiet on the Western, by Erich Maria Remarque and narrated by Frank Muller. Just a short simple story about going to war and having battle in WWI. Perhaps though, the most profound insight into war’s horror ever written.

The novel tells the story of a German soldier’s detachment from humanity once set out as a combatant. No other fiction has ever achieved a more pronounced and accurate description of the physical and mental state of combatants. If you are going to comment on war, and have not fought yourself, you must read this seminal novel; or be a hypocrite.

The book practically opens with its teachings put into two full sentences: "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped (its) shells, were destroyed by the war."

This is among the most effective works of literature ever written.

Wow... just wow

How is it possible that a narrator can show such emotion yet also be stoic about emotion when the time calls for it? Frank Muller did an incredible job!

Great novel

What an awesome account that captures the violence and heartbreaking realities of high intensity conflict. No glamor, no heroics, just blood, shattered bone, and senseless deaths of young men of all nations. We never learn.
