Story
When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He'd ride up on his white steed and break the curse I've been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time, how the fairytale twisted into something far more crooked—and darker—than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

Story
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

Story
Six years ago, I awoke in a cage with no knowledge of who I was or where I’d come from. Six years ago, I was spared the flesh markets and instead thrown in with a group of savages, where I learned it was fight or die. Now, eight Orders of Assassins are converging on the only home I’ve ever known. All in hopes of purchasing new blade slaves for their ranks. I’m for sale, yet all I want is a life far from death and ownership. Then I meet them, the Order of Scorpions. Their allure is a threat to the freedom I crave, but I won’t fall victim to their sting, no matter how tempting it might be.

Of all the things that could have landed in her yard, it had to be him. For most people, finding a half-naked superbeing in their yard might be a dream come true. Unfortunately for Gracie Castro, it’s the exact opposite. Especially when he’s grouchy, rude, and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon. But when a hero of mankind needs you, you do what you have to. Even if it compromises everything you know. And totally changes your life.

Publisher's summary
A luxuriously magical retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in 17th-century France - and told from the point of view of the Beast himself.
I am neither monster nor man - yet I am both.
I am the Beast.
He is a broken, wild thing, his heart’s nature exposed by his beastly form. Long ago cursed with a wretched existence, the Beast prowls the dusty hallways of his ruined château with only magical, unseen servants to keep him company - until a weary traveler disturbs his isolation.
Bewitched by the man’s dreams of his beautiful daughter, the Beast devises a plan to lure her to the château. There, Isabeau courageously exchanges her father’s life for her own and agrees to remain with the Beast for a year. But even as their time together weaves its own spell, the Beast finds winning Isabeau’s love is only the first impossible step in breaking free from the curse....
Critic reviews
“Poetical, imaginative, and inventive.” (New York Journal of Books)
“A lush retelling of my favorite fairytale classic. Beautiful, poignant, and enchanting…Leife Shallcross’s Beast shines.” (C. L. Wilson, New York Times best-selling author of The Sea King)
"Glorious.... retells Beauty and the Beast in a compelling and surprising novel filled with peril, darkness, romance and beauty." (Kate Forsyth, author of Bitter Greens and The Wild Girl)

Story
A vicar with a passion for nature, the Reverend Albert Canning leads a happy existence with his naive wife, Hester, in their sleepy Berkshire village in the year 1911. But as the English summer dawns, the Cannings' lives are forever changed by two new arrivals: Cat, their new maid, a disaffected, free-spirited young woman sent down from London after entanglements with the law; and Robin Durrant, a leading expert in the occult, enticed by tales of elemental beings in the water meadows nearby.

And it is true; the center of the Beast's palace, the glittering glasshouse that brings Beauty both comfort and delight in her strange new environment, is filled with leafless brown rosebushes. But deep within this enchanted world, new life, at once subtle and strong, is about to awaken. Twenty years ago Robin McKinley enthralled listeners with the power of Beauty.

A fantastical novel, a wildly inventive tale—by turns poignant and funny, lusty and wrenching—about love and heartbreak. The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Not the type of romance I was hoping for 😑.
New author and narrator for me. This was more literary in its wording and probably safe for under 18 readers, but not too young. After outing myself as a deviant, I did enjoy this quite a bit with the story from the Beast's POV, his thought processes, perceptions and despair. A very lovely listen.

A beautiful story narrated by the great Jim Dale
I absolutely loved this story. I've never seen any of the Beauty and the Beast movies, so I had no preconceived ideas about the characters or the plot. Jim Dale is magnificent, as always, and conveys the pathos and loneliness of the beast in such a poignant way. Some other reviewers felt the story was too long, but I liked how there was ample time to fill out each of the characters. I will listen to this story many more times, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it as much each time.

Listen at 1.2 speed
I admit it was hard too keep my attention on the story, but changing the speed to 1.2 was a game changer. Loved it after that. Recommend trying that if story is too slow. It may be just the speed of the narration.

Interesting twist on a well known tale
Despite my familiarity with the Disney version, I found this engaging and intriguing to watch unfold. it was enjoyable seeing the story from the beast's point of view and seeing the various ways the author elaborated upon the original tale

Couldn't put it down
One of the best books I've listened to in a very long time. this book deserves much more attention. Very well written, and of course Jim Dale did a splendid job. Listened through in almost one sitting.

Beautiful
I love the way the writer conveys loss, loneliness, and love. The book was just a wonder to listen to. The narrator did a great job, as well. If you’re a fan of the beauty and the beast fairytale, you will enjoy this just so.
