Publisher's summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

Critic reviews

“The touch of fantasy interjected into this compelling audiobook is a unique departure from author Kate Quinn's usual historical fiction.… The narrators make the characters so real that listeners can suspend disbelief and feel their tension, grit, and cleverness. Both narrators display considerable linguistic talent as they portray these heroes with warmth and bravado.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

Lovely

What a wonderful, simple, but moving story. The women who helped win WWII at Bletchley Park, and at listening stations across the country, deserve so much respect. This was a wonderful way to celebrate them and the hard work they did for hours in difficult conditions.

This is a poignant story, and I’m sure I’ll listen to it again.

An excellent and engaging short story.

An excellent and engaging short story.

I was hooked from the beginning. The premise is excellently executed in the short page count.

Narrators are great. I am a huge fan of dual narrators for two perspective stories and Maarleveld and Gibson don't disappoint.

Restored my faith in KQ after disappointment of The Diamond Eye

What a wonderful story! However, the male narrator was completely superfluous. Saskia could have done this one alone, and in her sleep.

I wish Saskia narrated the entire book.

I love Saskia’s narration. In comparison the male narrator fell a bit flat.

Other than that I enjoyed this. Quinn never disappoints and is an automatic buy for me whenever she puts out something new.

Too short

Great story read by excellent narrators. I wish it had been longer. Would love to know more about the characters.

the voices took it to the next level

this story was great! it was a perfect length for the story. the narration really added so much to it as well. it was very world War 2 colliding with today but no one knew. that is, it collides via radio signals.
this is a quick short story that grabs your attention quick and before you know it, it's over. Like the characters in the story you may find yourself looking for it to last a little longer.

Amazing story

This was a great back to the future-esqe type story which crossed 1943 and 2023 brilliantly. Gripping and well read. Drew me in from the start. Will listen to again and highly recommend.
