Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown returns with a fast-paced, emotional thriller where the lives of a young mother and a high-rolling consultant collide under devastating circumstances—culminating in a desperate manhunt that will change their futures forever.

At a Texas county fair, amidst carousels and a bustling midway, children’s book author Elle Portman is enjoying a rare night out with her favorite cowboy: her two-year-old son, Charlie. But just as they’re about to head home, the unthinkable happens: a shooter opens fire into the crowd, causing widespread panic to erupt all around them.

Also caught in the melee was corporate consultant Calder Hudson. Arrogant, self-centered, and high off his latest career win, he’s frustrated and confused when he wakes up in the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery on his arm. The doctor tells him that he was lucky—that as far as gunshot wounds go, he pulled through remarkably well. Others weren’t so lucky, which instills in Calder a furious determination to get justice . . . a goal shared by Elle.

Their chance encounter at the police station leads to a surprising and inexplicable gravitation to one another, but even as the attraction grows, Elle and Calder can’t help but wonder if the unimaginable tragedy that brought them together is too painful and too complicated to sustain—especially while the shooter remains at large.

Emotional

I'am not good expressing myself in words . After listening to the first few
chapters, I was crying and nearly stopped the audio.
I thought it might be a factual study on trauma and grief .
I did continue and it was Sandra Brown 's fiction with all
the twists and turns.Didn't guess the villain until it was revealed.
wished there was a real epilogue --like Elle was .pregnant.
The narrating was good. Overall I recommend the book.
I have read or listened to all her books except two. There is one I
would not listen to ever again .-it was too sad.

Entertaining as always

Sandra Brown audio books are a must listen for me; she tells great stories with characters you care about. This is right out of the headlines, a mass shooting and aftermath. This is not dark or depressing but a view of the shooter and victims. I also enjoyed the author's note. The reader was good, but unfortunately a few NY accents crept in this book set in Dallas.

The Twist

Loved this book but the twist to me which was shocking and daring was who the killer turned out to be. The reasons why and the fallout had me enthralled.

Great Story - Not a Narrator on Fan

Another winning story By Sandra Brown which deals with a very difficult subject. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, their weaknesses and strengths.

The narration was hard to differentiate one character from another. One character sounded like she was a 70 year old 3 pack a day smoker, when she was really much younger.

Kyf Brewer is a usually pretty good narrator but this book wasn’t for him especially since many characters are female. His voice is just too deep to convincingly portray women.

Outstanding

I believe this was the best book she wrote. Just the right amount of suspense and just the right amount of sex and passion. I will definitely listen to it again.

There might have been a good story here

The underlying story might have been good. It is hard to tell. There was too much wrong. First of all, the story started with Elle's child being fatally shot. The book didn't focus on the major grief of this. Instead a heated romance comes out of her meeting Caulder who was also shot in this mass shooting, but he recovered quickly. The loss of Elle's child got lost in the shuffle. Elle's and Caulder's "relationship" was way too detailed, and if there was supposed to be chemistry, it fell flat. The story went on and on, to the point that I didn't have any interest in finishing it. But I pushed on to see how it was going to play out. It was never ending and nothing was really happening. Hours of listening, but it lacked a certain clarity.

The casual upbeat tone of the narration was a complete mismatch. The lilting lightweight manner with which the text was read was in opposition to what was going on. The serious nature of the material in the book just didn't come across. The narrator lacked the gravitas of the story's situation, and when he voiced Calder's character the attractiveness and charisma of his character was absent. The women's voices sounded silly.

There were a lot of good reviews, so I was surprised once I listened to it. The story was meandering and it was just boring.

An Excellent Moving Novel

Part mystery, part romance, part horrific commentary on the mass shooting experience way to common in our country, this novel insightfully takes us through what happens when such tragedy happens. It's emotional, not gorey, accurate, not melodramatic, and worth your time. It's very worthwhile. I read hundreds of books a year. This is a five star 🌟

Well done!

This was really good! I have been a fan of Sandra Brown’s writing for a very long time and look forward to each new release so I was excited to have the chance to read her latest book. I was surprised to learn that this book dealt with a mass shooting but Sandra Brown handled the topic well as I trusted she would. The story took me on a bit of an emotional roller coaster since it was heartbreaking at times, and exciting at others, with just enough romance worked in to keep things very interesting.

My heart broke for some of the characters quickly after starting the book. Elle and Calder were both at the county fair when the shooting occurred and the danger may not be over. Everyone present when the shooting occurred lost something but Elle’s loss felt incredibly profound. Both Elle and Calder are committed to finding out who is responsible for everything that has happened. The story got very exciting as they encountered one dangerous situation after another while the police tried to find who was responsible for the tragedy. I liked the chemistry between Elle and Caulder and thought that they worked well as a couple.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Kyf Brewer did a great job with the story. I believe that this is the first time that I have listened to this narrator’s work and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up other books that he narrates. I found his voice to be very pleasant and thought that he was able to add just the right amount of emotion to his reading.

I would recommend this book to others. I found this to be quite the page-turner and I loved that the mystery kept me guessing until the very end. The story ended on a hopeful note which I also appreciated. I cannot wait to read more of this talented author’s work in the future.

Would be so much better without the sex

I must admit, I read the reviews before purchasing the book. I have no one to blame but myself.
Good story but I don’t buy Sandra Brown books to read about sex. Disappointed. I don’t know if the inclusion of the worthless sex scenes were at the prompting of the editor or someone else- but they were not needed. Leave them out next time.
