Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling authors Preston & Child return in the latest installment of the bestselling series featuring renowned archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson, where a fateful trip to New Mexico uncovers a case that may prove impossible to solve.

In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their last campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing body parts. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved.

Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave, one a grisly suicide. Young FBI Agent Corrie Swanson teams up with archaeologist Nora Kelly to investigate what really happened on that fateful trip fifteen years ago—and to find the ninth victim. But their search awakens a long-slumbering evil, which pursues Corrie and Nora with a vengeance, determined to prevent the final missing corpse from ever coming to light.

I should have checked on the narrator first

Oh wow, is this narrator bad. She is so bad, I cannot focus at all on the story, even thought the plot is interesting. Why do they keep hiring her?!? Did no one listen to this before they sent it out? Is there no one reviewing narrators while they are recording? I’m returning this audio and buying the book, and if I see another audiobook with this narrator, I will pass.

Another great story!

Preston & Child are my favorite authors. The story was good and I liked how it related to the real life story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident. I try to cut the narrators some slack because I know I wouldn’t do a good job myself. This narrator’s male voices all sound the same and they all sound like stoners or idiots. Hard to make it through the audio book with the narration.

They need a new reader

I always look forward to any book written by these authors! But the reader sounds bad. They definitely need to find a new one

Ever hear of Dyatlov Pass?

the book was poorly narrated by a woman that makes every male voice sound so bad. the story itself feels like a variation on a real life event that happened in Dyaltov Pass. interesting but it would have been nice if they mentioned that they lifted the idea from a real life event. not their best book.

GREAT STORY GREAT NARRATOR

I feel I must lead with something in defense of this Narrator. I almost didn't get this book because of the poor reviews of the narration but I'm glad I did! I think this Narrator is great - she enunciates, does not whisper or talk too fast. I understand every word - very important!!
That said - I loved the story. very exciting & interesting plot. I'd love to see more stories with Corrie Swanson & Nora Kelly, my new favorite heroine duo.

An enjoyable story

Nora Kelly and Corrie Swanson are back and caught up in the middle of a bizarre mystery. A mystery with a real world counterpart. Dead Mountain is an Americanized fictionalized version of the very real Diatlov Pass mystery which took place in the old USSR. Did this story solve that mystery? Maybe, but we will likely never know for sure. What we do know, is that this story is a great deal of fun. At times it feels more like a Corrie Swanson mystery with a guest bit by Nora Kelly. The FBI procedural portion pretty much drives the whole narrative. Much of Noras portion is simply reacting to her brothers impulsive behavior and the trouble it lands him in. But that's fine. The overarching my

Ok story : poor narration

I really like Preston and Childs but this seemed a little predictable. The narration was painful, all the male characters sounded like lug heads - not enough variation.

Great listen, as usual!

Really enjoyed the storyline.
Cory is so different than when we first met her with Pendergast, but I suppose that’s to be expected after FBI training. Still, she seems too meek.
Too bad Pendergast didn’t show up at all in this one. I’m surprised she doesn’t call him for advice.

The best in this series

Much better than the previous entries in this series. A much more satisfying story and better development of its characters.

Pronunciation

I loved the book, but the mispronunciations were almost too much for me. These are common words and names in New Mexico. It shouldn’t be hard to look up their proper pronunciation.
