"Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned"...So say the publishers about this audiobook I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii, and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold.

At the age of 24, her husband, Doo, gave her a guitar as an anniversary present. Soon, she began penning songs and singing in front of honky-tonk audiences and eventually made her way to Nashville, securing her place in country music history.

Publisher's summary
The rich and colorful story of America's most popular music and the singers and songwriters who captivated, entertained, and consoled listeners throughout the 20th century - based on the upcoming eight-part film series to air on PBS in September 2019
This deeply researched and hugely entertaining history begins where country music itself emerged: the American South, where people sang to themselves and to their families at home and in church, and where they danced to fiddle tunes on Saturday nights. With the birth of radio in the 1920s, the songs moved from small towns, mountain hollers, and the wide-open West to become the music of an entire nation - a diverse range of sounds and styles from honky tonk to gospel to bluegrass to rockabilly, leading up through the decades to the music's massive commercial success today.
But above all, Country Music is the story of the musicians. Here is Hank Williams' tragic honky tonk life, Dolly Parton rising to fame from a dirt-poor childhood, and Loretta Lynn turning her experiences into songs that spoke to women everywhere. Here, too, are interviews with the genre's biggest stars, including the likes of Merle Haggard to Garth Brooks to Rosanne Cash. Rife with endlessly fascinating anecdotes, the stories in this sweeping yet intimate history will captivate longtime country fans and introduce new listeners to an extraordinary body of music that lies at the very center of the American experience.

Elton John is as much loved for his outrageous personality and witty outspokenness as for his music. Such shamelessness and sheer silliness rivals anything uttered by punk rockers, yet it is so typically Elton: honest and intemperate. Tragedy and heartbreak have played a large part in his life. Behind the parties, the hedonism, the lavish stage costumes, and silly glasses lies a more somber story. Between disputes with managers, legal wranglings, public breakups, and divorce, John has been faced with serious health problems and drug addictions.

Story
Here Comes the Night: Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues is both a definitive account of the New York rhythm and blues world of the early '60s, and the harrowing, ultimately tragic story of songwriter and record producer Bert Berns, whose meteoric career was fueled by his pending doom. His heart damaged by rheumatic fever as a youth, doctors told Berns he would not live to see 21. Although his name is little remembered today, Berns worked alongside all the greats of the era.

Riley “Blues Boy” King (1925-2015) was born into deep poverty in Jim Crow Mississippi. Wrenched away from his sharecropper father, B.B. lost his mother at age 10, leaving him more or less alone. Music became his emancipation from exhausting toil in the fields. Inspired by a local minister’s guitar and by the records of Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker and encouraged by his cousin, the established blues man Bukka White, B.B. taught his guitar to sing in the unique solo style that, along with his relentless work ethic and humanity, became his trademark.

The age of the rock star, like the age of the cowboy, has passed. Like the cowboy, the idea of the rock star lives on in our imaginations. What did we see in them? Swagger. Recklessness. Sexual charisma. Damn-the-torpedoes self-belief. A certain way of carrying themselves. Good hair. Interesting shoes. Talent we wished we had. What did we want of them? To be larger than life but also like us. To live out their songs. To stay young forever. No wonder many didn't stay the course.

When musicians in the New York folk scene of the 1960s grew tired of city life, they decided to "get it together in the country". They headed for Woodstock - not to the site of the infamous music festival of 1969 but to the Catskills, to Bearsville, to Woodstock proper. Counterculture revolutionaries like Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, and Paul Butterfield got "back to the land", turning the once sleepy hollow into a funky Shangri-La.

But the actual story of his life remains unknown save for a few inaccurate anecdotes. Up Jumped the Devil is the result of over 50 years of research. Loretta grew up dirt poor in the mountains of Kentucky, she was married at 13 years old, and became a mother soon after. At the age of 24, her husband, Doo, gave her a guitar as an anniversary present. Soon, she began penning songs and singing in front of honky-tonk audiences and eventually made her way to Nashville, securing her place in country music history.

Great trip through history!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was unable to watch the PBS broadcast and now I feel so much better knowing that I was able to listen here on Audible. I felt that they did a great job keeping the continuity of not only the time, but of the artists and other very important people in the process of making country music. I liked hearing the quotes from not only country music people, but from other aspects of music as well.
Growing up in the late '60s and '70s, the middle of this book meant the most to me. but I also learned a lot about early on. For example, Web Pierce was always one of my favorite singers, and I had no idea that Elvis and Johnny Cash toured together with him in the early years.
Even if country music isn't your thing, this is a very very good recount of how music affects all of us and how we affect music. Thanks for releasing this audiobook.

Great Historical Documentary
Perfect Burns documentary that chronicles country music and its reflection on our shared history. Most American music is based on the influence of many peoples...country music is no different. This documentary show how country music reflected/s a way of life. Highly recommended. Watch the tv show as well. Like others, I wish they would have included more of the songs that shaped history.

Very well done.
The material was great. Just a very well written history of country music. It would have been amazing to actually hear the music referenced, like I imagine they had for the documentary, but this was still an outstanding audiobook. And I thought the narration was very well done. Great pacing. I’d actually look for other books the main narrator has done to see if I’m interested in the story.

Immersed in country music!
I was highly anticipating the PBS documentary. So much so that I pre-ordered the hardcover and audio versions of the book. None of them were disappointing. I'd watch an episode with the hardcover so I could follow along with pictures, then listen to the part of the book covering that episode the next day. Much easier to absorb the details that way.
As to the content of all of them, you get the most from the books. Does that mean absolutely everyone in country is covered? No, there just wouldn't be time. My husband was disappointed that it ends in 1996, but again, there are time constraints.
Another upside to this being a Ken Burns product is you get the facts, not tabloid fodder. (Maybe someone else would approach it the same way, but I'm a big fan of KB's Civil War, Roosevelt and Vietnam documentaries.)
Narration and production are all professional and polished. Well worth repeat listens!
