Story
Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now they’ve learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed Callyn’s parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Magic never helped Jax, whose leg was crushed in an accident that his father has been punishing him for ever since.

Story
The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand. King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents’ shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King’s Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion - it’s the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere.

Story
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage. Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive. So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king. Critic reviews
"Has everything you'd want in a retelling of a classic fairy tale: a finely-drawn fantasy world, a heroine rarely seen in fiction, and a tortured hero with a secret. I have only one complaint: I wish the sequel were already available!" (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author of A Spark of Light and Small Great Things, on A Curse So Dark and Lonely)

It's no easy job being the town nutcase. Ella knows from experience. She's grown up in a quaint little place with people who pretend the extraordinary isn't happening around them. They ignore the bumps in the night and won't talk about doors closing by themselves or items moving mysteriously. They also won't talk about the old woman who haunts the streets. Good, but too much repetition
It’s an entertaining story and interesting conclusion to the series, but there are multiple sections that repeat descriptions almost verbatim. I’m sure readers can see parallels without using the exact same phrases.

Great Conclusion to the Trilogy!
I really enjoyed this last book. I feel like it tied everything in together well, when the last book left things so uncertain in this war. I was also happy that the story took on the perspectives of each of the four main characters fairly equally. Finally, I wasn't in love with Lia Mara's narrator in book two, where she overacted and made her character seem immature in my opinion. However, I was pleasantly surprised and relieved to find that she seemed to tone it down and give Lia Mara's character the maturity she deserves. I liked the performances of all four narrators in this book, and it's definitely worth a listen!

Can’t care about Lia Mara
I think this would be a better story without Lia Mara. I just can’t bring myself to care about her story, and I don’t enjoy listening to the narration of her portions.
Based on other reviews, I tried to keep my expectations low, but at the end of the book, I just felt unsatisfied, sad, and disappointed.

Final Thoughts
The ending was a little lackluster but it was an overall very intriguing series.

All the feels and a mostly satisfying conclusion
Thoroughly enjoyed this series even if I found some of the characters to be a bit grating. I loved getting the perspective of all four main characters in this book. Kemmerer brought so much life and emotion to each of these characters and told the story in a way that nearly had me in tears at multiple points throughout the book. The ending did feel a bit rushed and I was left wanting a tad more to wrap it all up, but overall loved this conclusion and the series as a whole is an entertaining indulgence!

Good but...
Satisfying ending and I love that there is room for more..I’ve enjoyed this series!
The performance of Lia Mara was not to my liking. Someone it sounded like a whiny teen rather than a queen. I wish the voice actor was given better direction on this one!
