Resumen del Editor

From the best-selling author of The Storm Before the Storm and host of the Revolutions podcast comes the thrilling story of the Marquis de Lafayette’s lifelong quest to defend the principles of liberty and equality.

Few in history can match the revolutionary career of the Marquis de Lafayette. Over 50 incredible years at the heart of the Age of Revolution, he fought courageously on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a soldier, statesman, idealist, philanthropist, and abolitionist.

As a teenager, Lafayette ran away from France to join the American Revolution. Returning home a national hero, he helped launch the French Revolution, eventually spending five years locked in dungeon prisons. After his release, Lafayette sparred with Napoleon, joined an underground conspiracy to overthrow King Louis XVIII, and became an international symbol of liberty. Finally, as a revered elder statesman, he was instrumental in the overthrow of the Bourbon Dynasty in the Revolution of 1830.

From enthusiastic youth to world-weary old age, from the pinnacle of glory to the depths of despair, Lafayette never stopped fighting for the rights of all mankind. His remarkable life is the story of where we come from and an inspiration to defend the ideals he held dear.

Dear Listener,

What drew me to the Marquis de Lafayette?
"While producing the Revolutions podcast series, the Marquis de Lafayette kept showing up over and over again. From his teenage entry into the American Revolution in 1777 all the way through his critical role in the Revolution of 1830 as a 72-year-old, he was an active participant in the most dramatic moments in a pivotal epoch of world history. Biographers and historians tend to focus on his youthful exploits, but once I grasped the breadth and depth of his revolutionary career, I wanted to tell the full story of his almost impossibly eventful life." –Mike Duncan, author of Hero of Two Worlds

An excellent biography of an exceptional man

Mike Duncan has been my favorite history podcaster for about 8 years now, and he delivers, yet again, in a big way. What a captivating story about a man whose name is such commonplace in our country, but about whom I knew relatively little. The arc of General Lafayette’s life takes the reader through many important milestones in the formative years of both the United States and modern France. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history. In addition, I would recommend Mike Duncan’s Revolutions podcast, because it complements the book perfectly, expanding on many details and events in Lafayette’s life. A must read! (Or listen…)

Mr. Duncan is an exceptional writer

Additionally he's an excellent reader. The time he spent in France sifting through firsthand accounts mixed extremely well with his clear, down to earth, and engaging style.

Seriously good book.

Magnificent

I have been following Mike Duncan’s History of Rome and Revolution podcasts for years, but he managed to outdo his earlier great accomplishments with this book. Engaging storytelling — I could not stopped listening to it. Although Duncan is undeniably partial to Lafayette, this book is meticulously researched and is delivered with elegant humor and in an engaging style. A fascinating portrait of a remarkable man.

Very good book

I must say this was one of the most well written and informative books I have listened to. A lot of the autobiographies you hear will bore you to death. This one was well composed and flowed very good. Kept me interested the entire time and tied a lot of other historical events together very well. I would give it 6 stars if I could

An excellent book about the Marquette de Lafayette

Lafayette is a little understood character in American history and Duncan details his life and accomplishments in exquisite detail.

I cried three times.

You know a history is good when you are so engrossed in the characters that you cry multiple times listening to it.

A must read or listen well done.

This book is very well done. A story that really educated me on a man that I knew off, however, now carry much admiration for his life and his accomplishments. Full of remarkable quotes from many people of history I deeply respect. Mr. Duncan is a voice I know through his History of Rome pod cast which sent me on my own several year deep dive reading many books of history on the subject.

I also drifted into historical novels on the same topic well over 100 books of history and novels including his own work Storm before the Storm (I think) on the topic. I find that he reads slightly fast for me but Audible allows me to set the play back speed slightly which increases my enjoyment.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to anyone.
